To participate in Dual Enrollment, students must live in North Carolina or attend a North Carolina high school.

College Transfer Pathways

Juniors and Seniors

High school juniors and seniors may participate with

Freshman and Sophomores

High school freshman and sophomores may participate after meeting the following criteria: 

  • benchmark assessment scores (PDF) in all areas (English, reading, math)

  • AIG plan showing gifted in both English and Math

  • Principal’s (or their Designee) Recommendation 

  • AIG Coordinator Recommendation 

Or:

  • benchmark assessment scores (PDF) in all areas (English, reading, math)

  • Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Test with score at or above 92% This test is given by the Central Piedmont Testing Center and may be scheduled by completing this form. Students must have Benchmark test scores to take the Reynolds Test.

  • Principal’s (or their Designee) Recommendation

You can take the RISE Placement Test at no charge (by appointment only). You are encouraged to review the practice test on the website to study and prepare for the test.

You may only schedule the Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Test after providing Benchmark test scores to the Central Piedmont Testing Center or passing all sections of the RISE placement test. This test is offered at no charge and may only be taken once. To schedule this test, contact the testing center.

Career and Technical Pathways

Juniors and Seniors

Have an unweighted high school GPA of at least 2.8, or benchmark assessment scores in all areas (English, reading, and math), or for many CTE pathways, have recommendation of your principal/high school designee.

Freshman and Sophomores

Current CTE pathway areas for 9th and 10th graders include: architectural technology, automotive technology, biomedical equipment technology, business administration, computer integrated machining, construction management, electrical systems technology, horticulture technology, HVAC, mechatronics engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology, non-destructive examination, office administration, simulation and game development, sustainability technologies, welding technology.

Ask your school's counselor if 9th and 10th graders may participate. If your school allows freshmen and sophomores to participate, you must have the following:

  • recommendation of your high school principal or their designee, including rationale for recommendation
  • passed Math I with a grade of C or better
  • score of 3 or greater on the End of Course assessment (EOC) for Math I
  • score of 3, 4, or 5 on the 8th grade End of Grade ELA assessment

Or:

  • recommendation of your high school principal or their designee, including rationale for recommendation
  • demonstrated college readiness in English, reading, and mathematics on an assessment (review the benchmark assessment scores (PDF))

Additional Guidelines

The exact number of years/semesters a student may participate in Dual Enrollment depends on their high school grade classification when they start the program.

Students who are successfully progressing towards high school graduation may have access to the College Transfer Pathways for up to one year as a junior and up to one year as a senior.

Students who are successfully progressing towards high school graduation may have access to the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathways for up to four years - one year as a freshman, one year as a sophomore, one year as a junior and one year as a senior.

If a student does not attend a North Carolina high school, proof of NC residency must be established for the student.  Please include with paperwork either:

  • The student's NC license or learner's permit OR
  • The parent/guardian's NC license/ID or utility bill plus tax return showing student as the parent/guardian's dependent (financial information and social security numbers can and should be marked through to protect your information)
