Eligibility

To participate in Dual Enrollment, students must live in North Carolina and attend a North Carolina high school.

College Transfer Pathways

To be eligible for College Transfer Pathways, you must:

Career and Technical Pathways

Juniors and Seniors

High school juniors and seniors may participate with

  • an unweighted high school GPA/UGPA of at least 2.8, or
  • benchmark assessment scores (PDF) in all areas (English, reading, math) OR
  • your principal/high school designee's recommendation (An option for these pathways only - link to CTE less than 2.8 GPA list)

Freshman and Sophomores

Freshmen and sophomores can choose from these pathway options

Ask your school's counselor if 9th and 10th graders are eligible for Dual Enrollment — not all schools allow their 9th and 10th graders to participate

If your school allows freshmen and sophomores to participate, you must have:

  • the recommendation of your high school principal or their designee 
  • passed Math I with a grade of C or better
  • a score of 3 or greater on the End of Course assessment (EOC) for Math I
  • a score of 3 or greater 3, 4, or 5 on the 8th grade End of Grade ELA assessment

Or:

  • the recommendation of your high school principal or their designee 
  • demonstrated college readiness in English, reading, and mathematics on an assessment (review Benchmark Scores (PDF)

You can take the RISE Placement Test at no charge (by appointment only). You are encouraged to review the practice test on the website to study and prepare for the test.

Additional Guidelines

The exact number of years/semesters a student may participate in Dual Enrollment depends on their high school grade classification when they start the program.

Students who are successfully progressing towards high school graduation may have access to the College Transfer Pathways for up to one year as a junior and up to one year as a senior.

Students who are successfully progressing towards high school graduation may have access to the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathways for up to four years - one year as a freshman, one year as a sophomore, one year as a junior and one year as a senior.
