Azores, Portugal: “Fall Break in the Azores, Portugal: Historical Perspectives & Mindfulness Practice”
This study abroad program offers an intensive exploration of modern world history in the Azores, Portugal, an archipelago celebrated for its volcanic landscapes and rich maritime culture. You will engage in a curriculum that balances theoretical study with hands-on experiences by studying the impact of geography on cultural and economic development and investigating the historical significance of whaling. Activities include an Azorean culinary journey, hikes through diverse terrains featuring lakes and geothermal springs, visits to botanical gardens, pineapple and tea plantations, and a dairy farm, as well as marine excursions like whale watching and snorkeling around São Miguel Island. Daily mindfulness practices will be integrated to enhance students’ experiential learning, including guided meditations during hikes and reflective journaling sessions by the sea, fostering a deeper connection with the environment and oneself. This program aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the Azores' natural beauty and its influence on local history and economy, capturing a unique blend of historical academic learning and cultural immersion in one of Portugal's most unique regions.

Nestled in the heart of the Atlantic, the Azores Islands offer a unique blend of stunning volcanic landscapes, rich maritime culture, and a window into the influence of geography on society’s development. This study abroad program is designed to immerse students in the natural beauty and cultural wealth of these islands, providing insights into the following:

Fall 2024 Cancellation and Refund Policy
If you need to cancel your participation in a Study Abroad program, you must notify the Center for Global Engagement promptly. Should you request a refund, please ensure this is done before June 20th.
Before June 20, 2024: Requests for refunds due to cancellations will be carefully considered under the following guidelines.
- Individualized Consideration: Each request will be assessed on a case-by-case basis to accommodate unique situations.
- Program Specific: Refund policies, amounts, and timelines of reimbursement may vary by program.
After June 20, 2024: Participants will no longer qualify for refunds beyond this date. Please take this policy into consideration before committing to and investing in a study abroad experience.
Estimated Cost of Program: $3,785
This cost is approximate and includes the $100 application fee due when you apply, $20 insurance fee, flights, and program costs.
Payment Deadlines are non-negotiable. Once you are accepted, you will receive instructions on how to submit these payments:
- June 5: $1,000 due
- June 20: $895 due
- July 3: $895 due
- July 10: $895 due
Please note: These payment deadlines are firm. No matter the day that you are accepted, you will owe all of the payment deadlines above at the assigned date. There are no exceptions.
Other costs to consider that aren’t included in the program fee:
-passport and visa fees (if applicable)
-Personal expenses (ex: meals in airports, snacks, souvenirs, etc.)
-Central Piedmont course registration associated with the program
