Need to Know/Requirements
To be considered for the Basic Law Enforcement Training program, you must meet these requirements:
- no felony convictions
- dismissed charges may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis
- a traditional high school diploma, GED, or certified North Carolina homeschool diploma
- online-only, vocational, or high school certificates are not accepted
- complete 868 hours over the course of the program
- no excused absences allowed (e.g., weddings, trips, etc.). You must be fully committed. Plan your personal time before enrolling.
- completion includes:
- successful completion of 868 mandated hours (in as little as 22 weeks)
- completion of the Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT)
- the North Carolina BLET State Certification Exam
Out of State and Other Training
- if you trained out of state, you:
- must have two years of full-time, sworn law enforcement experience
- must have completed a state-accredited basic law enforcement training program
- no more than one year break in service
- Federal officers and military policy must complete North Carolina's BLET in full and pass the state exam.
- Training from other states may transfer toward North Carolina BLET certification.
Certification Expiration
- Graduates must be hired or sworn in by a law enforcement agency within 12 months of completing BLET.
- If you go 12 months without being sworn in, your certification will expire.
- To regain certification, you must complete the full BLET program again.
How to Register
- Registration is not available through regular college registration.
- Email us to schedule a preliminary interview.
- After meeting entry requirements, you will be added to the class roster.
- Official registration happens on the first day of orientation.
