Central Piedmont is committed to ensuring that every student has an equal chance to learn. The Disability and Access Services office helps students with documented disabilities receive the support they need. This includes academic accommodations, helpful tools and assistive technology.
Requesting and renewing accommodations
Current Students
Request
Log in to Central Piedmont Accommodate using your Central Piedmont credentials. Navigate to Semester Request in Accommodate (instructions are in the Resource Library under the Resource tab). Submit a new request form each semester.
If you need an accommodation(s) to participate in a student-related meeting or event, email Disability and Access Services at least 48 hours prior to the event to discuss how we can best accommodate you.
Renew
If you are taking classes at Central Piedmont after a few semesters away, email Disability and Access Services to reactivate accommodations and/or be assigned to a new Disability and Access Services counselor.
Admitted Students
Documentation of your disability is required. Refer to the Guidelines for Health Documentation (PDF) to learn more about submitting health documentation.
After securing documentation, complete the Disability and Access Services Student Intake Form. A Disability and Access Services counselor will contact you via email within 10 business days to schedule an appointment.
Services
To request the following services, you will first need to be approved for the accommodation. For information on how to obtain approval, visit the Academic Accommodations page.
Assistive technology
An assistive technology device is any equipment, software program, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a person with a disability. For more information and to make a request, email the assistive technology specialist and include your Central Piedmont student ID number, your Disability and Access Services counselor's name and the type of assistive technology you need.
Interpreting (sign language)
Disability and Access Services has highly skilled interpreters who can provide interpreting services in the classroom. Class schedule adjustments may be necessary to provide interpreting services. In addition to classroom accommodations, you may also request assistive listening devices and interpreting services for campus activities and meetings by requesting services at least 48 hours prior to the event.
Academic testing
The Disability and Access Services Testing Center is a distraction-reduced testing room where the proctor may facilitate accommodations by using assistive technology, proctor-assisted intervention, or coordinating accommodations for another proctor to provide. To use the testing center, you’ll need to provide your instructors with an accommodation letter each semester and meet with the assistive technology specialist before taking your first test in the Testing Center. Be sure to request an appointment at least one week in advance of the intended appointment day, and include your name and student ID number, your preference between a virtual or in-person appointment, the course title and the instructor’s name.
Study skills
Disability and Access Services provides individualized support in areas such as note taking, time management, study skills, organization, and self-advocacy for students who are registered with the Disability and Access Services office. Support is available as needed or via weekly individual study sessions (45 minutes).
Alternative format books
If you have an approved accommodation, you can request alternative formats for textbooks. To do so, attempt to purchase or rent the textbook in a version accessible for the specific print disability. If there is not a version that suits your needs, purchase the textbook and keep your proof of purchase.
Disability and access counseling
Disability and Access Services counselors can assist you through referrals, advocacy, academic accommodations and general support. Working with a counselor can promote your overall success at Central Piedmont.
