“Bare Bearings” examines the persistence of memory and gender ideologies over time through deconstruction of second-hand domestic fabrics. The artist collects materials from the American Southeast including curtains, pillowcases, and upholstery remnants. Employing materials associated with the domestic space alongside actions that connect to care and labor such as washing and combing, the artist then extracts each strand of the fabric's weft individually as an intimate, time demanding act of interrogation and removal. This removal also serves as a type of reveal. As the weft is removed, the printed images remain present, reflecting the persistence of gender hierarchies and aesthetic tropes in which the patterns serve to signify. After becoming altered, the materials take on a ghost-like quality and are held together by found objects such as embroidery frames which connect to the history of crafts and decoration. The exhibition ultimately offers a quiet space to contemplate the materials and their relationship to memory and meaning. And, in turn, consider what all these materials bear. 

AnnaBrooke Greene is an interdisciplinary artist from South Georgia working in fibers, sculpture, and installation whose practice explores themes of gender, memory, and time through material. Greene holds her MFA Florida State University and a BFA from Georgia Southern University. Greene currently lives and works in Augusta, GA as a faculty member for Augusta University's Department of Art and Design.
