About the Emergency Medical Science Degree program
In this Associate in Applied Science degree program, you will explore rescue operations management, emergency medical science management and emergency medical science education methods. You will graduate equipped to become an entry-level paramedic, with the foundation needed to grow into a leadership position within emergency medical services, or an EMS-related educator.
What you'll learn
In the EMS degree program, you will study:
- emergency scene management
- invasive procedures
- EMS system management
You will also earn ACLS, PALS, TECC and PHTLS certifications, and you will complete eligibility requirements for the paramedic certification.

With a degree in emergency medical science, you can advance your knowledge as a paramedic provider and EMS educator.
EMTs provide basic life support with shorter training, handling CPR, oxygen, bleeding control and patient transport. Paramedics have advanced training (1–2 years) and deliver advanced life support, including IVs, medications, airway management and cardiac monitoring. Paramedics handle more complex, life-threatening emergencies. The degree program at Central Piedmont will prepare you to become a paramedic.
