Dr. Amy Bruining is a student-centered leader with more than 25 years of higher education experience. She currently serves as Central Piedmont Community College’s vice president of student affairs, providing executive leadership for student access, engagement, and success. Her division delivers comprehensive support services that span the entire student journey — from early outreach and recruitment, through enrollment, engagement, programming, and compliance, to completion and graduation.
Appointed to her current role in 2024, Dr. Bruining has led efforts to streamline the application-to-enrollment process, foster a culture of care and collaboration, and promote the college’s focus on the whole student. She has championed programs addressing food insecurity, mental health and wellness, childcare, emergency housing, and access to professional dress through the college’s clothing closet initiative. Her leadership has been pivotal in driving enrollment growth and ensuring that students receive the wrap-around support they need to thrive.
Dr. Bruining has held leadership roles in both academic and student affairs. Prior to her current position, she served as associate vice president of academic support, overseeing academic operations, global learning, tutoring, and college libraries. Her earlier roles include assistant to the vice president of academic affairs, associate dean of graduation and records, and director of graduation and institutional records management.
With deep roots in the community college system and a strong commitment to its mission, Dr. Bruining is a trusted voice and fierce advocate for every student at Central Piedmont. She considers it a privilege to serve the college community and remains dedicated to creating a holistic and empowering student experience.
Dr. Bruining earned her Doctor of Education in educational leadership and a master’s degree in community college leadership from Western Carolina University. She also holds a bachelor's degree from James Madison University.
