The State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Foundation, together with the N.C. Community College System (NCCCS), has awarded Central Piedmont Community College an $18,000 grant to provide financial assistance to students seeking state-regulated or industry-recognized credentials through the college’s Corporate and Continuing Education department. Central Piedmont is one of 20 colleges being awarded funding through the SECU Bridge to Career Program – a pilot initiative that seeks to remove financial barriers to students seeking training/credentials that lead to living wage and sustainable wage careers.

The grant monies will be awarded during the 2018-2019 academic year, providing a $500 scholarship to 30 students enrolled in a short-term, welding, phlebotomy or EMT training program (minimum of 96 hours) at Central Piedmont. Students may use the funds to supplement costs associated with registration fees, books, certification fees, course supplies and other educational expenditures. The remaining $3,000 of the grant’s funds will be used by the college to provide administrative support for the program.

The scholarship program is slated to be administered by Central Piedmont’s Corporate and Continuing Education Operations area, with support from the college’s Financial Aid office and Grants Administration team. The Operations area will lead the program, identifying and selecting eligible students and connecting the cohort to vital support services, such as soft skills training and interview preparation to alleviate barriers to job attainment.

“The SECU Bridge to Career Program focuses on assisting unemployed and underemployed adults, military veterans and members of the National Guard with marketable job skills that lead to sustainable wage careers within their local communities,” said Becky Hall, associate dean for Corporate and Continuing Education at Central Piedmont. “Central Piedmont is proud to be a pilot institution as it strives to help local residents create upward mobility in their lives.”
