Message to the College on Coronavirus — First Case in NC Announced

From Central Piedmont Environmental Health and Safety:

North Carolina Emergency Management leaders announced yesterday that a person from Wake County has tested positive for novel coronavirus (COVID-19). It's the first identified case in NC. The news release states, "The person is doing well and is in isolation at home." 

Central Piedmont continues to monitor coronavirus and wants to share this latest update, as students and faculty go on spring break next week. Please visit the coronavirus information for travel website from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) if your plans involve international travel. Here are the countries on the warning, alert, and watch lists as of today:

Level 3 – warning: CDC recommends travelers avoid all nonessential travel to the following destinations. Entry of foreign nationals from these destinations has been suspended:

  • ​​​China​
  • Iran

Level 3 – warning: CDC recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to the following destinations:

  • ​​​Italy
  • ​​South Korea

Level 2 – alert: CDC recommends that older adults or those who have chronic medical conditions consider postponing travel to the following destinations:

  • ​​​​Japan

Level 1 – watch: Travelers should practice usual precautions at the following destination:

  • ​​Hong Kong

Please review the CDC's website about coronavirus with all the latest information about the outbreak. In the meantime, the college continues to work with the Mecklenburg Department of Health and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Resources. 

The college's Core Response Team is reviewing its pandemic plan to ensure we're prepared in case the health department advises us to make any schedule changes if coronavirus becomes an issue in our area.

As with any sickness — such as the common cold, flu, or stomach bug — we ask students and employees to stay home if they experience a fever (100°F or greater), vomiting and/or diarrhea. You should be free of these symptoms for at least 24 hours before you come back to campus.​

As always, we need your help to prevent the spread of any communicable illnesses so please continue to take everyday preventive actions, such as making sure to regularly wash your hands; sneezing or coughing into a tissue or the crook of your elbow to avoid germs on your hands; avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth during "sick season;" and more.
