Q: What is an Academic Advisor?
An Academic Advisor is a professional who provides academic counseling to new and prospective students without an academic major. You Advisor will explain policies, procedures, and program requirements and assist you in selecting educational and career goals. Your Advisor will review, interpret, and evaluate your test scores and other information to determine the most appropriate classes to begin your course of study.
Q: Do I need an appointment to see an Academic Advisor?
No. Advisors usually see students on a walk-in basis.
Q: Do I need to do anything before I see my Academic Advisor?
The first step is use the study guides. There is an Online Interactive Study Guide in English and Reading, or you can download the Paper and Pencil Study Guides for (Sentence Skills, Reading Comprehension, and Math) provided at the CPCC website. Then, take the ACCUPLACER Placement Test at any campus. When you have finished the placement test, you will have the basic document needed to talk to you Advisor.
Q: What is a placement test?
A placement test provides an accurate assessment of your academic proficiency levels which help determine the most appropriate courses for you in English, Reading, and Math. Therefore, it's very important you do the best you can.
Q: Why do I need a placement test?
The placement test scores help determine the best courses for you to take so that you will be successful in your classes. If your scores indicate that you should be in college level courses, then appropriate courses will be recommended in English, Reading and Math. If you need some development in any or all of these areas, there are courses designed to give you the tools you will need to be successful in the college level courses.
Q: How do I prepare for my placement tests?
Schedule your testing for a time when you will be well rested and not be rushed. To prepare, it is recommended that you review the Accuplacer study guide which is available online.
Q: How long does the placement test last?
The test is not timed, and students can take the amount of time needed to complete the test. At the end of the test, you will be able to print a copy of your test results.
Q: How do I schedule placement tests?
Placement tests on Central Campus can be scheduled at the admissions office in Central High Bldg. or by calling 330-CPCC. To test at other campuses, contact the location.
Q: What do I do after the placement test?
After you take your placement test, you should sign in to see an Academic Advisor to have your score interpreted. At this session, the Academic Advisor will recommend appropriate classes based on your test scores.
Q: Can I retake placement tests for a better score?
Not usually. To retest you must have written authorization from an Advisor, Counselor or Department Chair.
Q: Can my placement test scores from another college be used at CPCC?
Yes, if you took the College Board ACCUPLACER/Computerized Placement Tests (CPTs). Official test results must be sent to Central Piedmont directly from the institution where the tests were taken.
Q: How long does the advising session for new students take?
The average session takes about 20 minutes, but the time may vary depending upon questions that you may have that will require more time to explain, or special circumstances that may be involved.
Q: Am I registered after receiving a yellow copy of my courses from an Academic Advisor?
No, you must take the course(s) listed on the yellow copy of the intake form, the CPCC schedule and a worksheet to work out the location, days, and times (no overlapping times) that best fit your schedule. You can then register online, by telephone or in-person during the assigned registration period. It is also important to keep a copy of the schedule for future reference.
Q: What are the steps to getting registered?
A: There are three (3) ways you can register: in person, by phone or online.
· Talk to your advisor for course recommendations
· Use the REGISTRATION FORM (obtain from the Student Success Desk)
· Fill in your CPCC Student ID #, Last Name, First Name and Middle Initial.
· ONLY FILL IN ADDRESS IF THIS INFORMATION HAS CHANGED SINCE YOUR LAST REGISTRATION.
· Answer the two questions below the address update box
· Fill in the Course Prefix, Number and Section Number. (These letters and numbers tell the system the rest of your course information. We recommend that students who are new to the college experience fill in the Campus and times and dates of your classes so you can see how your schedule will flow.

Q: When do I have to pay for my courses?
Refer to the myCollege website for specific information about tuition payment deadlines. If the bill is not paid by the applicable deadline, all courses will be dropped from your schedule.
Q: What do I do with transcripts from another college?
In order to complete your admissions to Central Piedmont community College, you must request an OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT of your grades from all previous schools attended (high school and college). Transcripts f should be mailed to:

Reminder: Contact your high school or former college/university to determine their transcript fee. To expedite time, you may obtain a hard copy of your official transcript from a previously attended college or university and hand deliver it to the Registrar at any campus.
Q: Can I enter a degree program without a high school diploma?
No, you cannot enter a degree program however, you can start classes without one. You can only enter a degree program and receive financial aid AFTER your high school diploma is on file at CPCC.
Q: What is a prerequisite and co-requisite?
A prerequisite is any course that must be completed before enrolling in the course requiring the prerequisite. A co-requisite is a course that must be taken during the same term as the course requiring the co-requisite.
