Spam Filter Notification

Your ITS team has implemented an anti-spam filter that will attempt to identify and tag SPAM email. This filter uses a set of criteria to preview email message headers. Suspect messages are tagged with the phrase:


in the subject line of the message. Actual message content is not modified. This whole process is handled by a software program automatically without human intervention.

Unsolicited email messages broadcast to internet communities are commonly referred to as SPAM. Recently, college employees have been receiving misleading and unwanted email messages from miscellaneous sources on the Internet. The content of these email messages is often undesirable, commercial or pornographic in nature.

The following criteria are generally used to identify SPAM, although the filter uses a complex and sophisticated algorithm:

* Frequency of certain key words within the message
* Domain or site used to send the message (known SPAM sites)
* Invalid header format of email message (sender unknown etc)
* Extraordinarily large number of recipients

There is a possibility that some legitimate e-mail will be tagged as SPAM. If you receive mail that has been incorrectly identified as spam, please forward that mail message to or contact the ITS Help Desk at ext. 5000. This will enable us to fine tune the filter, preventing erroneous labeling of future messages.

To further assist you with managing SPAM, Outlook rules can be setup that will automatically delete, or move to a folder, all ***POTENTIAL SPAM*** labeled email. You may want to assess the performance of the SPAM filter on your messages for a few weeks before setting up a rule for automatic deletion. This will prevent the unintended loss of legitimate email.
