Accomplishments for 2010-2011

Goal 1: Student Learning and Success

Ensure student learning and success by promoting an innovative and supportive learning environment.

Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) has certified 1567 associate degree and diploma graduates, 856 recipients of curriculum certificates, 632 GED recipients, and 344 Adult High School graduates. The Pathways to Employment Program had 391 graduates.

CPCC launched its participation in the Achieving the Dream (ATD) initiative aimed at helping more community college students succeed.

ATD Core Data Teams selected two priority areas for the 2011-2012 academic year: improve success rates of developmental math students; improve the success rates for online students.

Academic Related Courses (ACA) offered 185 sections to more than 3,700 enrolled students.

 

ACA 111 (College Student Success) offered 40 sections in fast-track format to College Connection students from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and to CPCC students in summer 2010.

 

Adult High School Program increased its graduation rate by 10 percent.

 

Arts and Communication established further opportunities for student experiential learning from a global perspective though the music appreciation concert series featuring international music artists and the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.

 

Health Information Technology (HIT) Program coordinated a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of the National Coordinator for HIT to provide short-term training to equip students with skills for entry-level jobs.

Physical Therapist Assistant and Cardiovascular Programs implemented the Test of Essential Academic Skills for competitive admissions in order to admit and retain students who are better prepared for success in the programs.

 

Medical Assisting students had a 100 percent passing rate on the Certified Medical Assistant Exam, and Dental Assisting Program students passed the Dental Assisting National Board with a 100 percent passing rate.

 

Nursing Program fully implemented a new curriculum based on the recent Curriculum Improvement Project.

 

Early Childhood Education Program reached a record number of 60 practicum students.

 

Transportation Systems Technology developed an ongoing semester-by-semester system of tracking and advising the more than 50 percent of its students who need developmental courses.

 

Criminal Justice Technology faculty member published an article, “Improving the Success of Transfer Students:  Responding to Risk Factors,” in the Journal of Learning Community Research.

 

Horticulture Technology and Turfgrass Management Technology Programs researched, designed, and installed a GreenWall on Parking Deck 3 on Central Campus, which provided 70 students the opportunity to engage in applied learning about this emerging technology.

 

Office Administration Program successfully improved the learning outcomes of word processing courses by piloting myitlab, allowing students the ability to facilitate their own learning through recorded lectures, simulated labs, and real-life projects.

Paralegal Technology faculty developed and delivered a certification review for former graduates in preparation for the North Carolina Certified Paralegal Exam with 94 percent passing the exam.

 

Pathways to Employment Program, which served over 422 students this year, added two new curriculum certificates: Office Administrative Specialist and Developmental Disabilities Specialist.

 

Library Services launched the use of LibGuides to provide tailored reference and research guides that are available to CPCC students 24/7.

 

Library Services taught 338 library instruction classes and librarians were available in 42 online courses, providing students with information literacy instruction.

 

Library Services acquired eight new databases to expand offerings and student access to electronic and print information resources.

 

Library Services provided netbooks for student checkout from all campus libraries to expand student access to computing resources within the libraries.

 

Electrical/Electronics Technology Program received approval for a dual-track degree program in Power Systems and Alternative Energy for Electrical Design and Construction.

 

Construction Management Technology Program received approval to offer a certificate in Entry Level Construction Supervision.

 

Construction Technologies Division signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Carolina’s Association of General Contractors and received funding to develop 100 percent online courses for construction supervision training.

 

Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology students submitted projects to the Printing Industry of the Carolinas in a competition with other colleges and won four Best-of-Category awards.

 

CCE-Economic Recruitment and Career Readiness exceeded their goal of 730 Career Readiness Certificate holders.

 

CCE-Financial Services Institute created seven online classes and two traditional classes for income tax preparers to meet the 2011 IRS requirements.

 

Information Technology Division added prerequisites to CIS 110 to improve retention; the number of students enrolled decreased by 15percent, but student success (A-C grades) increased from 54 to 63 percent.

 

Sustainable Technologies Program was approved as a training provider for students to sit for national certifications in renewable energy and green building with newly developed courses in photovoltaics and green building concepts.

 

Business and Accounting Division completed a leadership program through Students in Free Enterprise designed to equip students with basic leadership skills.

 

International Learning secured approval of the Global Understanding course based on the Eastern Carolina University model involving virtual communications with three partners around the world.

 

Horticulture Technology and Turfgrass Management Technology Programs developed three new CCE courses to help students obtain certifications by successfully passing exams for the International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist.

 

Lifelong Learning Institute’s Aging Studies developed and offered several new classes to provide fast-track training for jobs in the high-demand area of healthcare and assisted living.

Engineering Technologies Division students advanced to the national competition in Robotics in their first year of participating in the event.

Geospatial Technology Program students were among six finalists in the National Geospatial Skills Competition in San Diego.

Institutional Advancement/CPCC Foundation Office raised over $4 million in support of College priorities.

ITS enhanced teaching and learning experiences by identifying suitable and cost-effective microphone and camera standards to enable select classrooms with audio and video recording and broadcast capabilities.

ITS maintained all smart and technically-enhanced classrooms and computer classrooms by replacing 100 podium locks to ensure proper podium security.

ITS improved the overall performance and reliability of the College’s online learning environment by upgrading the server hardware used by the Blackboard and Moodle learning management systems.

ITS published the Net Price Calculator on CPCC’s website to assist students and families in estimating college expenses.

ITS completed the implementation of a new look to the College’s website to improve students’ ability to easily locate pertinent information.

Institutional Advancement/CPCC Foundation Office secured over $300,000 in gift-in-kind donations to meet the technology needs of instructional programs and received a gift to provide equipment for the Cardiovascular Technology Program.

Institutional Research provided appropriately disaggregated and accurate data for the Achieving the Dream Data Team.

Academic Learning Center’s Academic Success Program expanded to the Levine and Cato Campuses.

Career Services expanded job search assistance to graduating students in 27 academic programs.

Career Services reviewed 5,192 resumes online, a 131 percent increase over the previous year.

Counseling Services established a Veteran Student Support Counseling Committee to review strategies, enhance enrollment processes, and address the unique transitional needs of veterans.

Counseling Services made successful efforts to encourage faculty to use the Early Alert Online Referral Process.

First Year Experience Program served over 100 new students per week in Pre-Enrollment Preparation sessions designed to introduce students to the college experience and prepare them for success.

Disability Services collaborated with Library Services to develop a loan process for assistive technology equipment at each campus.

TRiO/Student Support Services students had a 12.2 percent graduation rate, achieving a higher rate than the general student population despite having entered college as at-risk of non-completion.

Family Resource Center received 9,008 visits in 2010-2011 compared to 3,859 visits in 2009-2010, a 133 percent increase.

International Programs and Services collaborated with International Business to develop the Global Learning Community for spring 2011 semester, providing peer academic support and international perspective.

Minority Male Mentoring Program’s enrollment increased from 33 students in 2009-2010 to 116 students in 2010-2011.

Graduation and Records expanded the Certificate Completer Project informing potential completers of their status; 4,488 completers were identified and 2,138 have been certified as graduates.

Outreach and Recruitment enrolled 370 College Connection students in a one-week, summer Fast-Track College Student Success course.

Service Learning placed 11 America Reads tutors in two Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and one after-school program to provide literacy support.

Student Life and Service Learning partnered with Mobilize.org to host the Target 2020: My Education. Our Future. NC Community College Summit, welcoming 125 students who heard several speakers discussing higher education topics.

Testing Services collaborated with the First Year Experience Program to pilot the ACCUPLACER diagnostic tests and created new ACCUPLACER practice tests.

Transfer Resource Center, in partnership with UNC Charlotte, implemented the Passport Program; 72 students in this dual-enrollment program complete their first-year courses at CPCC and then transition to UNC Charlotte for their sophomore year.

The Veterans Resource Center held its grand opening ceremony on September 8, 2010.

Finance and Administrative Services reviewed the Higher One Student Refund Program to more effectively support students and reduced the accounts receivable balance.

Community Relations and Marketing Services (CRMS) promoted the College’s programs and services to students via CPCC TV, available on youtube.com/cpcctv, Time Warner, AT&T’s U-verse, and facebook.com/cpcctv.

 

CRMS utilized Critical Alert, extension 6888, social media, CPCC TV, email, and cpcc.edu to communicate weather-related closings.

 

CRMS supported registration efforts through email, cpcc.edu, banners, CPCC TV, magicnets, and social media.

 

CRMS adopted a theme of student success in 2010-2011 and emphasized success stories in the Annual Report and Report to the Community and distributed approximately 120,000 pieces community-wide.

 

Advisement Management Team monitored issues and policies related to Standards of Progress and developed guidelines for use by advisors.

 

General Education Committee revised the Behavioral and Social Science General Education goal that was then approved by College Senate and Learning Council.

 

College Senate submitted a Grade Appeals draft for approval by Learning Unit and Cabinet.

 

Retention Committee provided input and research-based information to aid the First Year Experience Program with comprehensive steps for enrolling first year students.

 

Goal 2: Organizational and Professional Development

Foster an organizational culture that maximizes individual growth through expanded learning opportunities.

 

Achieving the Dream Data Facilitator, Dr. Ken Gonzalez, trained ten faculty and staff on how to effectively conduct student focus groups.

 

Academic Related Courses (ACA) hosted a Regional Cengage Learning Conference at the Harris Conference Center entitled “Realizing the Dream through Student Success Courses,” and over 80 educators and administrators from across North Carolina attended.

 

ACA instructor, Linda Dunham, received the Instructor Excellence Award for spring 2010, and Linda was a semi-finalist for the North Carolina 2011 Teacher Excellence Award.

 

Culinary Arts faculty maintained American Culinary Federation certification by accumulating 80 continuing education hours every five years, including eight-hour refresher courses in Culinary Nutrition, Safety and Sanitation, and Culinary Supervisory Management.

 

Professional Development partnered with Human Resources to offer 107 classes in Microsoft technologies in support of the Career Ladder initiative.

 

eLearning designed, developed, and delivered a nine-hour series on “How to Teach Online” using Blackboard and Moodle; 84 faculty took advantage of the series, providing them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and tools for success.

 

Developmental Disabilities Program created a new certificate in Supported Employment.

Professional Development created and delivered the first Developmental Education Institute Program for part-time faculty teaching Developmental English, Reading, or Math.

 

American Academy of Applied Forensics developed a simulation using funds from the Fund for Improvement of Post-Secondary Education grant, and six CPCC staff were trained as facilitators.

 

Professional Development hosted a Learning Community for 70 part-time faculty, providing a series of technology training sessions in partnership with the Teaching Commons, the Library, and Digital Media Services.

 

eLearning hosted a two-day Quality Matters (QM) Inter-Institutional Quality Assurance in Online Learning workshop for 30 instructors, program chairs, and division directors on applying quality benchmarks and identify good practices in online learning.

 

eLearning completed 88 Quality Course Reviews during the academic year.

 

Two faculty members from the Engineering Technology Division were trained in the Mechatronic Systems Certification Program at the Siemens Technik Akademie in Berlin, Germany.

 

Environmental Health and Safety, in partnership with the National Safety Council, provided weekly Web-based safety tips for faculty and staff via the employee front page on the CPCC website to increase employee awareness.

 

Information Technology Services (ITS) made iPad wireless devices and wireless broadband modems available to faculty identified by the Learning Unit to evaluate potential uses of mobile consumer technologies for improved access to College course materials from home and to enhance interactions with students.

ITS enhanced the capability of Student Technology Center staff by renewing and/or obtaining industry- specific certifications; and seven staff obtained A+, HP Warranty Certifications, and Dell Warranty Certifications.

ITS developed a faculty fellowship position in collaboration with the Learning Unit to facilitate communication and partnerships across College units and enhance learning technology for faculty and students.

Institutional Advancement/CPCC Foundation Office worked with other College offices to operate most efficiently and effectively producing desired outcomes to benefit the College, prioritizing fundraising needs and developing strategies.

Institutional Advancement/CPCC Foundation Office provided $80,000 to the College to support faculty/staff professional development.

Government Relations and Grants conducted eight customized training opportunities with CPCC faculty and staff to assist teams in developing project designs and ideas that meet the priorities of funders.

Government Relations and Grants collaborated with internal and external partners to draft a data sharing agreement to establish a student tracking system to support longitudinal data gathering and research and measure the quality and effectiveness of CPCC programs.

Government Relations and Grants led over 21 teams in the collection, analysis, and response to data required for Federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act activities.

Finance and Administrative Services teams held several College-wide and individual training sessions focused on understanding the budget process, general ledger reports, and using Datatel.

Admissions, Registration, Records, and Graduation held its first departmental retreat that focused on team building, customer service, and professional development.

Advising and Student Success Centers collaborated with faculty from select departmental areas to provide program advising at the Student Success Center.

Service Learning and Student Life directors received a 40-hour certification in mediation from Northwestern University.

Service Learning staff participated in a national two-day training program for Poverty Simulation facilitators.

Student Life led the 2010 charge for a tobacco-free college, and CPCC was honored by Mecklenburg County with a Tobacco-Free Champion Award.

Diversity Committee hosted the Charlotte Black Film Festival on Central Campus.

College Information Technology Team developed the Online Grade Change Request system, allowing faculty to submit grade changes through an online document workflow to eliminate paper forms, reduce errors, and improve record management and student customer service.

College Information Technology Team made available Online Leave Balances for Supervisors through WebAdvisor, allowing supervisors to view the leave balances of their direct reports.

Goal 3: Community Catalyst

Be a catalyst for the educational and socio-economic development of the community through partnerships, coalitions, life-long learning, and civic engagement.

 

Mathematics Division collaborated with a coalition of eight North Carolina community colleges to develop the platform for course redesign efforts that will impact developmental and college-level MAT course offerings in STEM-related degree programs.

 

Adult High School, GED, and English as a Second Language Programs collaborated with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to increase community awareness of the opportunities for at-risk students currently enrolled in local high schools to complete their education with CPCC.

 

Arts and Communication Division expanded partnerships with film and video industry leaders, including Charlotte Regional Partners, to help build the educational infrastructure needed to expand the industry in the region.

 

Law Enforcement In-Service Training Program partnered with CarSmart Associates, Inc. to train all county law enforcement agencies in the latest global technology used for roadside drug interdiction.

 

Horticulture Technology and Turfgrass Management Technology Programs partnered with Stalite Corporation, Carolina Wetland Services, Bartlett Research Laboratory, and Mecklenburg County to provide students an opportunity to learn the benefits of engineered soil, use of native plants for soil erosion control, latest research and technology in tree care, and emerging pest problems plaguing nurseries.

 

Horticulture Technology and Turfgrass Management Technology Programs collaborated with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools to create a unique partnership that provided students with the opportunity to utilize their skills in the construction of an athletic field.

 

Health Information Technology Program developed a partnership to refer program graduates to the online Registered Health Information Technician Program at Western Carolina University.

Surgical Technology Program added three new clinical sites allowing more prospective employers access to CPCC graduates.

 

Public Safety entered into a partnership with Transportation Security Administration and Global Corporate College to develop a Certificate of Achievement for completing specific Criminal Justice Technology courses.

 

Emergency Medical Services Program partnered with Carolinas Medical Center for Pre-Hospital Medicine, Mecklenburg County MEDIC, and the North Carolina Air National Guard to provide realistic Emergency Medical Technician training using the agencies’ advanced disaster simulation equipment.

 

Professional Careers Division logged over 7,346 hours working with co-op students and employers promoting employment of graduates and providing students with opportunities to apply classroom learning in their chosen industry.

 

Pathways to Employment Program was awarded a ten-year service award from the Charlotte Area Fund for helping its clients achieve self-sufficiency.

 

Community Development’s Family Literacy Program partnered with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and offered parent-centered English classes to more than 700 CMS parents. In addition, more than 200 refugees were served in the community through a partnership between CPCC and the Refugee Resettlement Office.

 

Construction Institute renewed its partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to offer the If I Had a Hammer Program through a donation from Time Warner Cable.

 

Construction Management and Electrical/Electronics students collaborated with Olympic High School and Habitat for Humanity to work on a house.

 

Non-Destructive Examination Technology partnered with the Electric Power Research Institute and Ridgewater Community College to develop a diploma in Nuclear Power Plant Inspection using industry standards to guide the development of the curriculum.

 

Non-Destructive Examination Technology was selected by Indian River Community College to participate in a National Science Foundation grant proposal for the National Center for Nuclear Energy Education and Training.

 

Corporate and Continuing Education (CCE) organized a free community seminar, “Energy Careers for a Bright Future.” The one-day event, held at the Harris Conference Center, was attended by 250 people with over 100 representatives from businesses, community services, and educational institutions providing the latest information on jobs, trends, and plans to develop the Charlotte region as an energy hub.

 

CCE-Economic Recruitment and Career Readiness completed pre-employment training for over 600 potential applicants for Siemens Energy.

 

CCE-Career Professionals Center continued to leverage relationships within the community to increase awareness of the Center by strengthening the connection with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Workforce Development Board (WDB) through ProNet and JobLink Centers.

 

CCE-Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Center collaborated with Charlotte School of Law to provide no-cost legal assistance to 60 of its eligible Small Business Center clients.

CCE-Institute for Entrepreneurship co-sponsored the Entrepreneurs Source Carolina Franchise Expo and generated College and program awareness to more than 150 attendees.

 

CCE-Leadership, Management, and Professional Development was recognized by Total Systems Education as Continuing Professional Education Provider of the Year for 2010 by the Project Management Institute for its Project Management Plus Certificate Program designed to assist displaced professionals.

 

Engineering Technology Division worked with CCE to provide training in blueprint reading at Siemens Energy for 124 students.

 

International Learning supported study abroad trips to: Costa Rica – Intercultural Communications; China – International Business; France and Italy – Art History; France – Culinary; Canada – Robotics competition; Canada – French immersion; Germany – German immersion; Costa Rica – Spanish immersion.

 

Welding Technology received accreditation from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) to train and test welders in accordance with the NCCER curriculum and standards.

 

Cooperative Education (Co-op) partnered with over 350 businesses and public agencies to provide co-op work experiences for college credit.

 

Center for Sustainability was awarded the Urban Conservation Award by the Mecklenburg Soil and Water Conservation District in recognition of exceptional work to conserve natural resources in the urban environment.

 

Institutional Research served the College through its expertise in research, evaluation, and tracking for grants and internal and external programs or agencies.

Services Corporation implemented new marketing strategies to promote Performing Arts and Events facilities and the Harris Conference Center to the community.

Services Corporation hosted a December open house for Harris Conference Center to generate interest among corporations and organizations and completed new sales kits and websites for the Harris Conference Center and Performing Arts and Events facilities.

Government Relations and Grants engaged 36 regional and national partners in support of grants planning and implementation.

Institutional Advancement/CPCC Foundation Office tailored its fundraising efforts to meet the evolving programmatic needs of the College and continuing enrollment growth.

ITS developed and implemented a process to streamline requesting, procuring, and installing physical infrastructure for communications.

Finance and Administrative Services’ Procurement Department performed various outreach initiatives to increase Historically Underutilized Businesses’ participation and lifelong learning.

Admissions, Registration, Records, and Graduation implemented a registration process for undocumented students in accordance with the NC Administrative Code and worked with the Latino community to communicate this information.

Advising and Student Success Centers partnered with the Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund to strengthen the network of support needed to enhance student success for recipients.

Career Services increased services to both students and employers with a total of 1,368 jobs posted by employers, an 18 percent increase over 2009-2101; 556 new employers registered with Career Services, a 32 percent increase over 2009-2010.

Career Services registered 73 employers for the 2011 Career Fair and 1,978 job seekers attended.

Counseling Services coordinated training seminars conducted by the Charlotte Veterans Center for the College community to raise awareness of the needs of veterans, with special emphasis on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

International Programs and Services collaborated with on-campus employers to hire twelve international students at Subway, four at the ITS Helpdesk, and six at Bojangles.

Transfer Resource Center hosted 47 colleges and universities at the College Transfer Fair that assisted 385 students with their transition to four-year institutions.

Veterans Resource Center developed an on-site Community Partners Office that houses a Goodwill staff member, providing job development and wrap-around services for veterans and their families.

Veterans Resource Center launched “Operation Independence,” a Microsoft Elevate America Veterans Initiative grant program, in partnership with Goodwill Industries, promoting personal and professional development of veterans and their family members, with an emphasis on technology access and use.

Classified Staff held the annual Morning with Santa event to benefit CPCC families and the Charlotte Community with approximately 250 attending the free event.

Community Relations and Marketing Services (CRMS) hosted a media cultivation event in the Philip L. Van Every Culinary Arts Center with over 30 local reporters, producers, and editors attending.

CRMS branded the Baking and Pastry Arts’ new café the Aspire Bakery & Bistro; rebranded CPCC Arts and Corporate and Continuing Education; created a logo for the upcoming CPCC 50th Anniversary Celebration; and updated the Services Corporation logo.

CRMS worked with the Learning Unit to promote STEM-S and energy initiatives via a four-page advertising spread in Our State magazine, the development of additional Web resources, and a local energy careers event in collaboration with the Charlotte Regional Partnership.

CRMS and CPCC TV hosted a VIP event to announce CPCC TV’s fall lineup and to announce the Broadcast Hall of Fame.

CPCC TV expanded its local programming by launching a new show, Inside Jobs, which explores careers that prepare CPCC students.

 

CPCC TV produced and aired 87 feature show episodes and expanded its YouTube channel posting to 511 videos.

CPCC TV used social media to increase its public visibility by launching a new CPCCTV Facebook page; and it produced 183 promotional spots focused on the programs and services of the College that aired on Time Warner Cable, AT&T U-verse, and the station’s YouTube channel.

CRMS provided marketing and public relations services to College partners, including Charlotte Concerts and Trail of History.

 

CRMS created an image campaign called “sucessfulfilled” using billboards and print to inform the community about successful alumni.

Goal 4 – Organizational Capacity to Serve

Plan and manage human, physical, financial, and technological resources so that College programs, services, and infrastructure meet student and community needs.

 

Pathways to Employment received a Breaking Through grant for $75,000.

 

Hospitality Education and Culinary Arts faculty served a March of Dimes Live Auction Chef’s Table Dinner in the Culinary Arts Center for 30 guests and raised $8,000.

 

Corporate and Continuing Education (CCE)-Financial Services Institute worked through a grant from Wells Fargo/Wachovia and provided 97 scholarships in financial services classes for unemployed or under-employed professionals.

 

Baking and Pastry Arts faculty and students helped raise $110,000 for the March of Dimes at a fundraiser at Carmel Country Club.

 

Dental Hygiene Program partnered with Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals, the Johnson & Johnson Group of Consumer Companies, and the Ora Pharma Company to obtain approximately $6,800 in oral care products for use in community health education programs, training, and clinical patient care.

 

Harper Campus collaborated with CPCC’s Grants Department and obtained a $120,000 Nuclear Regulatory Commission Grant to develop the Non-Destructive Examination Technology Nuclear Fast-Track Program.

 

Non-Destructive Examination Technology developed and initiated the Nuclear Power Plant Inspector Diploma Program and graduated its first class.

 

Construction Management Program developed and offered Green Builder classes for the Pathways Out of Poverty Grant (Pathways to a Green South).

 

Construction Technologies Developed a Green Maintenance Technology Program.

 

Sustainability Technologies Program created a renewable energy learning laboratory in the Pease Annex to support training in photovoltaics.

 

Center for Sustainability was the recipient of a grant from the Charlotte Rotary Club in recognition of its community educational programs and the support it offers to many environmental organizations.

 

English, Reading and Humanities Division, in collaboration with the Mathematics Division and under the auspices of CPCC’s Services Corporation, developed an SAT prep course offered at Levine and North Campuses prior to SAT testing dates.

 

Horticulture Technology and Turfgrass Management Technology Programs secured two grants of $3,000 each for the installation of a rain garden that provided a learning opportunity for over 100 students to utilize this emerging technology.

 

Facilities Services transitioned to G4S Secure Solutions, placing College security and law enforcement services under one contract, resulting in additional management control over all services provided, with an increased focus on prevention of issues.

Facilities Services had all parking decks retrofitted with induction light fixtures to reduce energy and operational costs.

College Information Technology Team developed a prototype of the smart podium after 250 faculty were surveyed by an ITS-faculty taskforce.

Information Technology Services (ITS) replaced the College’s existing network firewalls with next-generation application-aware firewall equipment enabling the provision of a safe and secure computing environment.

ITS implemented a new means of access—CPCCSecure—to the wireless network to enhance the security of the College network and support increasing proliferation of mobile computing devices.

ITS upgraded the hardware controlling its primary data storage system to enhance system stability and facilitate future growth of the College’s data storage.

ITS upgraded the College’s server virtualization systems to the latest suite of products reducing costs, easing complexity of management, and enhancing overall system performance and security.

ITS partnered with CPCC Security to support the Safe College initiative by installing and configuring panic alarm buttons in sensitive areas to improve employee security.

ITS enhanced communications by migrating 500 office phones to a unified communication system.

ITS developed and implemented a Web Class Attendance application to improve efficiency and accuracy.

ITS provided expanded support for creating audio and video media through real-time video streaming.

Institutional Research provided timely data to the Learning Unit on program costs, enrollment capacity, and student success variables to inform planning and decision-making.

Institutional Research provided data to units and 18 academic programs participating in program reviews.

Government Relations and Grants directed 50 teams in the development of grant proposals that will integrate new initiatives at the College to support learning and promote a culture of higher education reform.

Government Relations and Grants coordinated visits with the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Labor, U.S. Department of Education, and Gates Foundation to update these funders on current and future program development.

Government Relations and Grants established seven strategic teams from across the College to address national reform initiatives.

Government Relations and Grants researched and developed competitive position analyses for over 110 funding opportunities enabling the Office to make informed decisions regarding the pursuit of these funds.

Facilities Services experienced a 50% increase in recyclable materials collected by its waste management company.

Facilities Services worked with the Core Emergency Support Team to complete the required National Incident Management System training.

Institutional Advancement/CPCC Foundation Office secured support for a veterans’ counselor, and a gift has been obtained to endow a new faculty fellows program.

Finance and Administrative Services’ Procurement Department served as an advisor in the NC Procurement Transformation Project.

Finance and Administrative Services evaluated all reporting processes to ensure that all reports have one level of independent review prior to report submission.

Finance and Administrative Services teams have been cross-trained in all duties so that service will not be disrupted in the absence of a team member(s).

Human Resources, through the Equal Opportunity Office, provided relevant training in Discrimination and Harassment Avoidance to promote an environment of fairness and respect.

Human Resources provided weekly HR generalist support via “HR Express” at all campuses.

Human Resources created a “Healthcare Update” communication methodology to keep employees abreast of the Healthcare Reform Program.

Human Resources administered the Career Ladders Pilot for selected administrative job groups, creating a learning and career progression track.

Human Resources offered Employee Relations Training to over 60 CPCC supervisors to enhance their understanding of the importance of legal issues, employee development, and retention. This training was showcased as a best practice at the 2010 NC College and University Professional Association for Human Resources Conference.

Auxiliary Services successfully collaborated with Subway to establish a new restaurant at the Central Campus.

Auxiliary Services assisted with the opening of a Victory Coffee to provide an additional food service at North Campus.

Auxiliary Services conducted focus groups at all campuses to receive feedback on vending and food service offerings. As a result, Auxiliary Services has requested that Canteen include more healthy snacks in the vending machines.

Auxiliary Services worked together with Follett’s bookstore management and implemented a Rent-a-Text program. Over the fall and spring semesters, the cost to students for text rentals was $306,000 less than if the same texts were purchased.

Admissions, Registration, Records and Graduation implemented an online transcript request process.

2010-2011 federal Pell awards totaled $31,157,142, an 11 percent increase over the previous year, and were distributed to 10,602 recipients.

 

2010-2011 scholarships totaled $952,652 and were awarded to 1,162 recipients.

 

2010-2011 state award disbursements totaled $2,448,653 and were awarded to 3,763 recipients.

First Year Experience (FYE) Program established the FYE website where applicants are able to register for a Pre-Enrollment Preparation session and connect to other student services.

Enrollment and Student Services directors offered classroom management workshops for faculty dealing with difficult students.

Minority Male Mentoring Program staff recruited 65 instructors, staff, and administrators to serve as mentors for the program’s participants.

Achieving the Dream Core and Data Teams created two cross-functional, cross-disciplinary Think Tank teams to research innovative, evidence-based strategies, initiatives, and interventions to produce and sustain improved student success for both developmental math and online students.

College Information Technology Team introduced the faculty and staff blogging tool at http://blogs.cpcc.edu/emergingtech/.

Community Relations and Marketing Services (CRMS) created a more efficient process for naming new and established buildings and gave ownership of that process to the CPCC Foundation.

 

CRMS selected new vendors to assist with media relations, ensuring more accurate tracking and more effective outreach.

 

CRMS used recycled paper on most print projects, including the Annual Report and CCE schedules.

 

CRMS worked closely with CCE to ensure the schedule process is efficient, effective, and collaborative and reduced redundancies and processing time.

 

Process Review Team provided recommendations to Cabinet and Achieving the Dream on student barriers to success and for institutional improvement.

Promote and sustain innovation, entrepreneurship, and excellence throughout the organization.

 

Interpreter Education Program faculty and staff were recognized by the North Carolina American Sign Language (ASL) Teachers Association for support of the organization and actively promoting excellence in teaching ASL. CPCC’s program chair, Dr. Keith Cagle, was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

 

Interpreter Education Program was one of ten institutions selected to participate in the National Grant Project on improving curriculum related to Interpreter Education called “Outcome Circles” led by the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Center.

 

Paralegal Technology Program was found in compliance and recommended for re-approval by the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Paralegals.

 

Health Programs completed the online Road Map to develop new programs for new associate degree programs in Pharmacy Technology and Occupational Therapy Assistant.

 

Medical Laboratory Technology Program completed the self-study and site visit for professional reaccreditation this year.

 

Professional Development completed the design and project requirements to launch the ePortfolio pilot that supports student learning and promotes a culture of evidence at the College.

 

Information Technologies Division’s Simulation & Game Development Team won the Microsoft Imagine Cup competition for the second year in a row.

 

STEM-S/Center for Sustainability received two awards during the fall semester: The Charlotte Chamber of Commerce for the “Innovation in Green Award 2010” and The Charlotte Business Journals “General Excellence in Sustainable Business – Non Profit”.

 

Behavioral and Social Sciences Division continued to support the Trail of History television programs and developed three new programs on local history about the Catawba Native Americans, Early Days of Retail, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

 

Medical Laboratory Program completed the self-study and site visit and was approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences for reaccreditation through 2017.

 

Community Development’s Pathways to Employment Program was selected as one of ten programs across the country to be featured in an upcoming publication on career pathways by the Workforce Strategy Center.

 

English, Reading and Humanities Division, in collaboration with Crowder Construction Technology, offered HUM 115 Critical Thinking for the construction students at Harper Campus; and in collaboration with Heavy Equipment and Transport Technology, offered ENG 111 Expository Writing for Caterpillar (Carolina/CAT) students at North Campus.

 

Corporate and Continuing Education (CCE)-Records Management and Customer Service installed new payment software and implemented a new process for the Customer Service Center.

 

CCE-Records Management and Customer Service created databases to track certificate completions, scholarship applications, and awards for the Wachovia/Wells Fargo grant; clients for the Career Professional Center; and clients and students for Career Readiness Certificates.

 

CCE-Institute for Entrepreneurship was selected as one of three national case studies in a forthcoming publication by the National Association of Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE):  Helping Entrepreneurs Succeed: The Role of Community Colleges.

Cooperative Education student Jessica Lawrence was awarded the NC Cooperative Education Association’s Outstanding Student Award.

 

Compliance and Audit completed five audits and special investigations geared towards enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of the College and its resources.

Compliance and Audit completed ten required full-time equivalent (FTE) compliance reviews to facilitate the annual FTE audit, ensured the accuracy of the Institutional Class Reports, and achieved a clean FTE program audit.

Compliance and Audit provided leadership to implement the new requirements in Enhancing Accountability in Government through Leadership and Education (EAGLE) as required by N.C. General Statutes.

Environmental Health and Safety provided regulatory guidance pertaining to accident prevention and performed 72 inspections to identify and reduce hazard exposures to staff/students.

Health and Safety planned, conducted, and assessed 33 programmed fire drills at all locations to determine rapid evacuation readiness and evaluate overall response deployment capabilities.

Government Relations and Grants led the improvement of grant processes by strengthening the collaborative planning and grant-writing processes, grant orientation meetings, grant quarterly meetings, and meetings with deans and the Grants Review Committee.

The Executive Vice President’s Unit conducted the three-year unit review process.

Institutional Advancement/CPCC Foundation Office enhanced its utilization of technology to improve effectiveness and efficiency in recording and acknowledging gifts, tracking fundraising progress, and organizing mailing lists.

Finance and Administrative Services collaborated with Information Technology Services (ITS) to implement an online process for both Sponsored Programs and CCE.

Finance and Administrative Services’ Cashiering Office worked with ITS and Student Registration and Admissions to allow students to request and pay for an official College transcript online through the College’s website.

Finance and Administrative Services’ Cashiering Office streamlined student receivables, invoicing, and collections by effectively working with ITS and the Financial Aid Office to provide accurate information to students through the College website.

Finance and Administrative Services issued all pay advices online for part time employees reducing postage costs, ensuring no checks were lost in the mail, and guaranteeing that money was in the bank on pay day.

Human Resources implemented the NCFlex Benefit Option for all full-time employees.

Career Services received a CPCC Innovation Grant to provide free career assessments for students receiving financial aid who are undecided about their career goals; 173 students have completed the assessment.

Service Learning utilized a NC Campus Compact mini-grant to support CPCC’s annual Martin Luther King Day Challenge.

Student Discipline staff reviewed and updated the Student Code of Conduct.

Veterans Resource Center implemented a comprehensive intake process that provides a holistic assessment of a client’s needs and concerns, enabling staff to develop an individualized service plan.

Office of the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services (ESS) is facilitating the ESS Unit’s involvement with several grant opportunities including Next Generation Learning Challenge, Completion by Design, Partners in Post-Secondary Education, and the West Charlotte Corridor Initiative: Project LIFT.

Community Relations and Marketing Services (CRMS) supported “THE Geek Fest,” which generated more than $25,000 of in-kind gifts to the College while being a self-supporting venture.

 

CRMS entered and won several award competitions, encouraging the creative spirit among staff and collaborating departments.

 

CRMS utilized online analytics to provide internal clients with ad performance metrics.

Achieving the Dream Core and Data Teams formed six Strategy Teams for the 2011-2012 academic year to create and implement assessment plans for each strategy under priority areas.
