3.03 Employee Categories
The categories used in this manual to identify employee groups are derived from the job classification system:
A. An exempt employee is an executive, administrative, or professional worker who meets certain prescribed conditions set forth in the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, as amended.
B. A non-exempt employee is covered under the minimum wage and overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standard Act of 1938, as amended.
C. A full-time employee is assigned a full work load as defined for his/her position, is a member of the State Employees' Retirement System, receives all standard fringe benefits, and is paid at a weekly or monthly rate.
D. A part-time employee is assigned less than a full work load and does not receive all standard fringe benefits. Part-time non-faculty employees will be paid at an hourly rate regardless of whether the employment is continued for more than one term. A part-time employee does not have an expectancy of continued employment after his/her assignment is completed.
E. A classified employee may be full-time or part-time, is not exempt from the minimum wage and hour provisions set forth in the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, and does not receive a contract.
F. A faculty employee may be full- or part-time, is exempt, and receives a contract for education or education support work. Instructor, counselor, division director, senior librarian, and librarian are faculty positions at Central Piedmont Community College.
G. A professional employee may be full- or part-time, is exempt, and receives a contract for education support or institutional support work. The professional staff is comprised of all employees other than classified, faculty, or administrative.
H. An administrative employee may be full-time or part-time, is exempt, has duties that are primarily executive and managerial or supervisory in nature, and receives an administrator contract. Administrative positions include: president, vice president, associate vice president, assistant vice president, assistant to the president, assistant to the vice president, dean, executive director, associate dean, director, or supervisor.
I. The supervising administrators are all the individuals (department/division level and higher) who have line responsibility for a specific employee.
J. The immediate administrator is the individual who is responsible for the direct supervision of an employee.
