Tarma
I am currently an international student pursuing an Associates in Science degree, with plans to transfer to a civil and environmental engineering program at a four-year university. I was given the opportunity this past year by you, my fellow students, to represent your interests as a member of the Student Government Association as Treasurer and I am grateful for that opportunity. As a member of the SGA I was able to better understand the running of the school and help make decisions that improved some of the services that the school offers. I served with you, the students, in mind and I would like to do so a second time as your President.

Because of my previous involvement with student government I fully understand what needs to be done to further improve the services offered to the students.  I am a full time student, but that will not hinder my goal of ensuring that the students of this college are properly represented.

One of my goals while running for Treasurer was to ensure that international students had a voice on campus, and I believe that I accomplished that task. I want to be able to unite all clubs and organizations on campus to help move students forward and improve the voice they have in the decision-making process.

Another goal I have set forth is to ensure that as Central Piedmont Community College continues to develop, the safety of the students remain a number one priority; the environment is kept intact and the buildings being built on the campus remain as green as they possibly can.

I also will help encourage students to get involved with the school and to help give back to the community. But, it’s important that students fully enjoy the experience of attending school. I know we are in hard economic times and people are returning to school, and I hope that they enjoy Central Piedmont Community College as much as possible.
CPCC is a major part of my life, so I want to serve and help our college continue to grow into an even better institution. Thank you so much for your support.

Stephen
Hello, my name is Stephen Marks. I am writing this to inform you of my intentions to run the position of Vice President of the Student Government Association on the Central campus of CPCC. I am currently a second semester freshman, but I have come a long way since Fall of 2008. One day I was searching the CPCC website and found a link that read, “How to start a new student organization.” I immediately decided I would jump at the opportunity to install a Guitar Club on the Central campus.

With the help of some loyal friends and faculty, the club got under way. The club was incorporated by early October. By late October, we had recruited well over fifty members and the number still grows every day. As the President of the CPCC Guitar Club, I decided to begin attending SGA meetings to meet new people and to be a voice for my club. I gradually became very good friends with most of the members of SGA. As I got more involved in the Spring 2009 semester, I decided to apply to be a Senator with Student Government. I started coming to every meeting and learning more about what the SGA was all about. As my experience grew in SGA, so did my friendships with the other members.

This all seemed to culminate with the N4CSGA conference in Early March 2009. It was a conference for members of North Carolina Community College SGA members. The trip helped me get to know the members of the SGA and I became more aware that what I was involved in was the right thing to do. The Student Government Association has helped me meet people and has given me more of a voice in school projects and events. I am a transfer student and upon completion of my Associate in Arts degree at CPCC, I plan to transfer to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to pursue a degree in journalism. I hope that by being elected, I can be a stronger voice for the CPCC community as a whole and still be able to represent the CPCC Guitar Club. As the election time approaches, please make the smart choice and vote Stephen Marks for Vice President of the Student Government Association.

Franck Idohou
Franck
Hello, my name is Franck Idohou. I am from Togo, a small country in West Africa. I have been involved with Service-Learning at CPCC as a member of the Service Club. We do a lot of service projects in Charlotte's area including going to shelters, help to serve food, landscaping, painting, and we even did a project with Habitat for Humanity last spring. Once a year during the spring break, we travel outside Charlotte for Alternative Spring Break.

I was also interested in what Student Life was doing, and I heard about the Student Government Association (SGA). Soon after that, my application for the CPCC Student Leadership Conference was accepted and that was a really insightful experience for me. I then started to come to SGA meetings and ask questions about what they were doing. Early this fall semester I became a senator of the SGA, and recently I have been accepted into the Student Leadership Academy. I am also proud to be a member of Phi Theta Kappa.

I have become a SGA senator because I wanted to be more involved in the activities and events on campus. Now, I want to become Treasurer in the Executive Committee because I think I can make a difference just by expressing my ideas and opinions which are the results of my past experiences. I want to be a bridge between the students and the administration. I want to get as many students as I can involved in the events on campus.

Holding a leadership postition is a good opportunity to learn things that are not always taught in the classroom, like working in a team or the process for making decisions. I am currently taking an accounting class, so hopefully this experience will help me there too.

Becoming a Senator for SGA was one of the best decisions I could have made. I love how involved SGA is in our school and communities. I especially love that SGA’s priority is students and that every concern of a student is a concern of ours. I want to become a member of the SGA Executive Committee because I want to continue to make a difference. I believe everyone has a voice and everyone deserves to be heard. One of the best qualities that make a good leader is one that listens and serves. I believe I can be that leader and serve my school and my fellow students to the best of my abilities.

For the past year and a half I have been secretary in the Study Abroad club.  I am also secretary for LASO, a member for the Service Learning club, scholarship committee, volunteer with Fun Camp Tobacco Prevention organization and currently serving student government as your senator.  I am so heavily involved in different clubs and organizations because I enjoy giving of my time to help others and getting to know other students.  My short term goal here at CPCC is to get my associates in Arts.  Then, transfer to a four year university and major in Linguistic. I want to become a translator and an interpreter for the court system.  I feel speaking different languages is a beautiful art form and an advantage especially here at CPCC because of our huge diversity. Thank you for your time and support.

Charles

Hello, my name is Charles-Hector. I am originally from Cote d’Ivoire, known as the Ivory Coast in English. It is a French speaking country of West Africa.  Having already an accounting background, I am currently enrolled in the Business Administration Curriculum of CPCC since Spring 2008 at the Central Campus.

I think if a word would best characterize CPCC that word would be diversity. The diversity in the offered curriculums and programs, the diversity of the student population as national and international, and the diversity of the clubs and campuses all contribute to the uniqueness of CPCC.

However, the most interesting, challenging, and enjoyable part is the synergy which all of these components of the college work with for the successful life of students. There is a celebration of this diversity through communication, student clubs, campuses, and different community activities that I want to embody and celebrate by my candidacy at the position of Public Information Officer. I have the experience of working in clubs since my high school and college careers in France and the Ivory Coast. Some of these experiences include:

  • My high school newspaper during three years as member of the editorial staff.
  • My community faith as treasurer of the youth Christian choir for two years.
  • President of the Student Government of the financial Accounting Curriculum of my Management School.
  • Member of the Young Toastmasters Club (Public Speaking club) in The Ivory Coast.
Wanting to share this experience with you and while being full of positive and constructive energy, I propose to you a new common adventure that would add a new tone to this wonderful rainbow that is Central Piedmont Community College. God bless you and thank you for your time.
