Spring 2007

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Adult Soccer League
3-4-2

Tigers Ousted from Tournament in Overtime
CPCC's season - and their tenure in the Mecklenburg Park and Recreation Adult Soccer League - ended in the first round of the tournament when Viet scored in the sixth minute of overtime.  Viet forced the overtime with a goal in the 65th minute that evened the score at 3-3.  Though Viet opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the ninth minute, CPCC quickly recovered to score two unanswered goals.  The Tigers came out of the halftime break with renewed energy to notch their third goal and create numerous other opportunities.  In fact, misfires on several point-blank shots on goal seemed to hand the momentum to Viet, who would complete their improbable comeback in OT.  With the loss, CPCC finishes the season at 3-4-2, the club's first losing record in Park and Recreation League play.

Week #9 - Tigers Drop Finale to Conquering Lions 1-5
With the season-ending loss, the Tigers fall to .500 on the season, finishing 3-3-2.

Week #8 - Tigers Extinguish Inferno 7-0
CPCC continued picking up speed as they roll toward the regular season finale, notching the second shutout in two weeks, this time a 7-0 victory over the Inferno.  With the win, CPCC moves to 3-2-2 on the season, and possibly further up the league table pending the posting of the other results from week #8.

Week #7 - CPCC Breaks Out Against Viet 6-0
Facing a Viet side that had narrowly lost to the Rivals 0-1 in week five and had handed the Lions a 2-0 shutout in week six, CPCC came in to this match expecting a fight to the finish.  Instead, the Tigers staked themselves to a 3-0 halftime lead and never let up, getting a 6-0 shutout and moving back to .500 in league play with a 2-2-2 record.

Ryan Kloepping started the scoring with a strike in the second minute, netting his seventh goal of the season.  In the nineteenth minute, John Bailey found himself alone with the keeper on the right side of the Viet end line. Inexplicably, the keeper froze, and Bailey calmly placed the ball into the net.  Six minutes later, it was Blaine Decker's turn to exhibit composure as he held off the last defender to squeeze a hard shot past a beaten keeper.  Viet then got their shot at getting back into the contest.  When one of their forwards managed to get into the right side of CPCC's box on the occasion of a rare defensive mistake, Jonathan Payne was there to smother a shot from near point blank range.  It would be Viet's last shot on goal, and Payne would go on to get the shutout.

With Andres Barrero, Jose Flores, Brandon Arnold and Jason Murphy tracking down any ball that managed to make it through the Tigers' midfield, CPCC seemed to attack virtually at will.  Midfielders Gustavo Hernandez, Anderson Mogollon, Julian Rojas and John Bailey formed an impressive midfield unit, where Matt Hunter and Stewart Collins also contributed valuable minutes. Rojas' exceptional foot skills earned him a free kick when two Viet defenders slashed him to the ground just outside the penalty box in the 44th minute.  Rojas made Viet pay with a beautifully placed kick in the upper left side of the goal.  Ryan Kloepping (66') and Anderson Mogollon (69') rounded out the scoring to bring home a win that provides a much needed shot of confidence.

Week #6 - Mambo Kings Edge Tigers 2-1 on Last Minute Goal
The Mambo Kings renewed their habit of scoring last minute goals against CPCC.

With the scored tied 1-1 for most of the second half on Ryan Kloepping's goal in minute 47, CPCC forwards missed several opportunities to put the Tigers ahead.  The Tigers kept up steady pressure throughout the match, but the Mambo Kings managed a goal in the final minute, getting several chances from in the box before the ball finally found the back of the Tiger net with mere seconds left.  The way this match ended weighed heavily on the players.  The Tigers enter Sunday's match trying to end a two game streak of close, disappointing losses.  The opponent, a tough Viet team, is a club that would love to extend the misery.

Of course, not everyone who attended was as concerned with the outcome.  Brandon Arnold (right) takes time after the match to regain perspective with a very special family member.

Week #5 - Polonia Hands CPCC 0-1 Loss - Season's First
Polonia was awarded a PK in the 67th minute of a scoreless tie. With the successful conversion, Polonia needed only three more minutes of shutout defense to preserve the win, and given the level of organization in the Tiger attack this day, the task proved about as easy as expected.  Because an insufficient number of Polonia players had shown up by match time, CPCC was offered, but refused, the option of accepting a forfeit.  Ironically, 16 Polonia players eventually showed up to play, while no substitutes were available to the Coach Lyle for the entire match.  The Tigers drop to 1-1-2 with the loss.

Week #4 - All matches postponed due to rain to be made up 5-27-07.

Week #3 - Tigers Salvage 1-1 Tie with Rivals
A goal in the 69th minute allowed CPCC to escape the pitch with a point against the Rivals.  After a red card was shown to Brandon Arnold in the 61st minute, the Tigers stepped up the pressure, placing the ball in the Rivals box every third or fourth possession.

Week #2 - Tigers Edge CHOA 1-0
Ryan Kloepping's header, combined with a solid CPCC defensive effort, proved the winning combination for the Tigers.  Veteran midfielders Jesse Plume and John Bailey made their first appearance of the season to complement a great turnout for the win.

Week #1 - Tiger Score Two Late Goals to Gain 4-4 Draw with Inter
CPCC completed an impressive comeback with two goals in the final ten minutes of play to avoid a loss in their league opener.  After opening scoring in the 14th minute, CPCC would be frustrated by Inter's speedy defenders for the rest of the first half.  Meanwhile, Inter struck back with three unanswered goals.  CPCC scored in the first five minutes of the second half, only to see Inter capitalize on a set piece minutes later.  Down 4-2 with 15 minutes remaining, the Tigers midfielders once again began to find spaces behind the Inter defense.  As forwards Ryan Kloepping and Blaine Decker responded with repeated well-timed runs, the Inter back four struggled to keep pace.  In the sixty first minute, Kloepping beat a defender, then the keeper, to slot home his and the team's third goal.  Still trailing by a goal, the Tigers pressed even harder.  Approximately five minutes later, Kloepping netted the equalizer.  The Tiger defense would have to withstand at least three more serious attacks before the final whistle sounded.
