Coach Juan DeLucca and team celebrates CPCC's first tournament
championship in three years following their victory against the top-seeded Rivals

Season Review
Juan DeLucca was all smiles following the tense championship match which saw CPCC squander a 3-0 lead, hold on through two overtimes, and finally prevail in an extended shoot-out (5-4) for his first tournament championship since assuming coaching duties in 2003.  More commentary and pictures of this outstanding season to come.

Match Reports

Tigers Advance to Final
The Tigers struggled mightily to subdue a revitalized Charlotte Polonia in the tournament semifinal round Sunday (6-5-05) for a 1-0 victory.  Polonia succeeded in dictating a slow pace for this match until Juan Manual Cerpa broke the deadlock.

With the win, CPCC advances to the tournament final for the second straight year, meeting defending champion Rivals Sunday (6-12-05) at 1:45PM.

Tigers Receive Forfeit from CHOA in Round 1 of League Tournament

Match #9 vs. Rivals
Despite dominating play for most of the 70 minutes of this match, CPCC could not muster a goal.  When the Rivals keeper failed to control the ball on a PK, CPCC's shot taker put the rebound into the net.  Unfortunately...and incorrectly, the officials disallowed the goal with an "offside" call.  The call doomed CPCC's chances of overtaking the Rivals for the league regular season title.  Justice must wait for the tournament.

Match #8 vs. Charlotte Polonia
Sunday's effort capped a great weekend for the Tigers, solidifying their hold on second place, and adding pressure to the first place Rivals in the GF/GA categories.
With only nine CPCC players on hand for kickoff, the team did not played as well as Saturday.  Even so, the offense produced plenty of goals in a 6-1 victory.  Coach DeLucca singled out Peter Berko as the "Man of the Match" for both games this weekend.  He played with heart and determination, filling important gaps in the defensive side of the field on both days.

CPCC Goals
Jaime Bueno: 10'
Miguel Angel Cerpa:  16', 32'
Juan Manuel Cerpa:  35' 45'
Ronald Kamara:  55'

Match #7 vs. Charlotte United
CPCC's dominance over Charlotte United continued in this Saturday match.  With the midfield controlling the entire game, Coach DeLucca fretted that "The defense did not have much to do." Final Score: CPCC 8, Charlotte United: 1.

CPCC Goals
Juan Manuel Cerpa:  15', 23', 40'
Miguel Angel Cerpa:  12', 30'
Renzo Alva:  55'
Jaime Bueno:  38'
Harold Berrio:  60'

Match #6 vs. Inter-Meck
Favorable weather returned for Sunday's league action, bringing with it a favorable result for CPCC.  Coach DeLucca declared after the match that the Tiger's first half performance against Inter-Meck was "One of the best of the season thus far.  We scored only two goals, but looked great doing it."  The defensive scheme was "simple", yet effective. The midfielders filled important spaces, and the forwards created numerous scoring opportunities, two of which Miguel Cerpa capitalized on to push CPCC to a 2-0 advantage at the half.

The second half saw Inter-Meck pull back to within one goal with a score at the eighteenth minute.  With several starting defenders out of the match for various reasons, the Tigers had no room for error in the back.  A major contribution to the team's success was made this day by Sincere Connor, whose offer to move from his usual position up front to shore up the defense proved crucial to the match result.  Connor contained numerous Inter-Meck counter attacks and effectively neutralized their best offensive player.  Jaime Bueno's goal at the 30 minute mark settled the issue for the day and complete the best team effort of the spring season.

CPCC Goals
1st half: Miguel Angel Cerpa (16', 32')
2cnd half: Jaime Bueno (30')

Match # 5 Charlotte United
Saturday's (4-30-05) match @ Sugaw Creek Park vs. Charlotte Utd. was postponed when a large thunderstorm swept through the Charlotte area two hours before kick off.

Match #4 vs. Choa
CPCC made an auspicious beginning to what hopefully will be many more appearances in Memorial Stadium with a 9-1 win over Choa. The nine goals scored in the win broke a logjam in the middle of the league standings, catapulting the Tigers into second place.  Read the article (complete with a picture and English translation) on the club which appeared in the 4-27-2005 edition of Charlotte's Spanish language newspaper La Noticia

Goal scorers included Jason Murphy (26'), Juan Manuel Cerpa (12', 20', 25'), Miguel Angel Cerpa (40', 47', 53'), Diego Pinzon (09') and one other player (let us hear from you if it was you!).

Match #3 vs. Mambo Kings
Sugaw Creek (pronounced like sugar) Park, was the site of this match with familiar foe Mambo Kings.  CPCC missed multiple opportunities to mark up a clear win, but settled for a 2-2 tie on goals scored by Juan Cerpa (20') and Jaime Bueno (50').

Week #2 vs. CLT Polonia
CPCC evens record with a 6-1 pasting of CLT Polonia.  No report as yet on scorers.

Week #1 Tigers Open Spring 2005 Season with 0-1 Forfeit vs. Rivals
Fewer than the required seven players were on hand for the 1:45PM kickoff, so CPCC took a 0-1 forfeit to open the season.

Torneo Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation

Equipo del CPCC derrota al CHOA

Liliana Forero

CPCC Soccer Defeats CHOA

Liliana Forero

Eight teams participate in a league organized by the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department. Among them is one from Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC), a soccer team that combines several cultures and nationalities.  Last Saturday, they faced league partner CHOA.  CPCC’s 9-1 victory clearly showed why CPCC was the champion of last year’s regular season and runners-up of the post-season tournament. The victory moves CPCC’s record to two wins, one tied and one lost (2-1-1).

In addition to the good soccer quality the team is demonstrating, it is important to emphasize that this is the only competitive athletic extracurricular activity supported by the College, a fact in which everyone involved with the club takes great pride. According to coach Juan De Lucca, the club’s success over the last six years has been a combination of several positive factors such as the support and participation by the students, the cultural diversity of the group, the unconditional support of CPCC’s athletic coordinator, Jim Bailey, the unprecedented support of the club’s sponsors “All Star Realtors” and “F.D.I.C. Fire and Water Damage Restoration” , and of course the great performance on the field.
