6-9-02
TEAM RUSSIA late goal bounces CPCC from Tournament 1-0.

Entering the post season tournament as the Spring 2002 regular season champions of the Mecklenburg Park and Recreation Adult Soccer League , CPCC Soccer's hopes for a third consecutive tournament championship were dashed by Team Russia in the closing minutes of their first round match.

As CPCC GOLD struggled throughout the first half to establish even the most rudimentary attack, Team Russia succeeded in putting together one possession after another.  CPCC struggled to find combinations which a month earlier had seemed well established.    As the match wore on, CPCC's patience wore down.  Under a hot sun, players on the sideline began to ask how a tie might be settled.  The question would be made moot with Team Russia's goal in the 64th minute. Energized by the lead and by the prospect of pulling off the upset, Team Russia pressed the point until the end.

The early exit from the tournament was a disappointment to all who have followed this edition of CPCC Soccer.  The midseason form  established by this group reached a level few clubs in school history have ever attained.  Players gave their friends and family the pleasure of witnessing many exciting matches along the way to a  REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP.  This team set a high standard for all who follow.  Their commitment, consistency, sportsmanship and overall "class" has been a credit to everyone at Central Piedmont Community College and to the sport of soccer.  The way you played the game, the way you came together, the graciousness with which you won and lost - none  will ever be forgotten.  Thanks for the memories.

SPECIAL THANKS
Special thanks go to Team Captain Eddie Benavides, whose leadership on and off the field has been invaluable in the development of this team.  We are also grateful to Neil Van Dyke's contribution of bringing  fresh water to the sideline of every match.

6-2-02
RIVALS down CPCC 2-0 in regular season finale.

The RIVALS brought superior touch and endurance to the regular season finale for both teams, downing GOLD 2-0.  In the process, the RIVALS almost certainly denied GOLD their first regular season championship.

Sunday's match was played on what was to officially become the hottest day since 8-28-2001.  Starting strikers Alex Tariah and Cheikh Khaddad were unavailable, as was defender Adam Couch.  As a result, several players were asked to perform in unfamiliar roles.

The match began with neither side gaining any real advantage, but the deadlock was broken in the 20th minute when Jason Murphy's foul in the box presented a PK opportunity to the RIVALS.  It was converted into an advantage the RIVALS would take into halftime.

The second half saw the RIVALS maintain its control with superior possessions and an increasing number of well-timed long balls over or through the GOLD midfield.  The GOLD attack became less coordinated, producing a mere five bona fide shots on goal.  CPCC's attempts at long balls were vacuumed up by the RIVALS rear defense and keeper.  Only some masterful saves by Jonathan Trent kept the RIVALS within reach for the first 20 minutes of the second half.  With increasing poise and accurate passes, the RIVALS were able to keep up the pressure even as CPCC pressed forward in an attempt to score.  There was no lack of individual effort on the part of CPCC in this match, but the shutout was a reminder that individual effort in this sport is not enough for team success.  It also constitutes a tremendous challenge to the confidence and solidarity of this team.

The tournament awaits.

Late goal dispenses with DEPORTIVO DOUBLE OAKS 2-1.

Despite dominating play in the opening minutes of this match against league newcomer DEPORTIVO DOUBLE OAKS, CPCC was the first to surrender a goal.  It came suddenly in the eighth minute on DOUBLE OAKS' second shot.  The goal signaled the beginning of an excellent match that saw CPCC struggle with a determined foe.

While controlling the midfield for most of the half, CPCC wasted several shot opportunities by extra touches or poor concentration. On defense, Jordan Nabb suffered a twisted ankle, putting more pressure on the back four.  But in the 30th minute, Alex Tariah carried the ball straight at the right post, then squared the ball across the goal mouth.  Cheikh Khaddad raced forward to pound the ball home for the equalizer.

DOUBLE OAKS stepped up their play in the second half.   Defensively, they sealed the box, pushing GOLD's quality shot opportunities to beyond the penalty area.  Their possessions were more prolonged and resulted in more penetration into the GOLD defending third.  Still, GOLD continued to attack, and with just over 5 minutes remaining  Cheikh Khaddad lined up a corner kick from the left side.  Khaddad, who had sailed a direct kick opportunity up and away earlier in the half, struck a high, arching kick that dropped into the goal just under the crossbar inside the far post.  GOAL!

CPCC GOLD now has a firm grip on second place in the league standings, irrespective of the outcome of the final regular season match vs. the RIVALS.   For the RIVALS, motivation abounds.  With a win, they could move up in the league standings, and they could avenge their loss to CPCC in last season's championship match, in which GOLD took the trophy in a PK shootout.  All told, the June 2 match will be the sternest test for GOLD since the league opener.

This match would be Ernest Brockington's last with GOLD for the Spring 2002 season.  Ernest's contributions have been significant, having played with great poise and skill in every role asked of him.  He he will be greatly missed these last few matches.  We are looking forward to Ernest's return in the fall.

GOLD hangs on for 1-0 win over MAMBO KINGS.

Soccer matches are not usually recounted well through the use of statistics.  Sunday's match against the MAMBO KINGS might well be one of those exceptions.  Consider:

  CPCC MAMBO'S
SHOTS 23 8
SAVES 7 12
CORNER KICKS 6 1
FOULS 4 4
PKs 1 0
RED CARDS 1 0

But for Yahya Rokayak's steady aim on a PK opportunity in the closing moments of the first half, the afternoon might have ended in disaster.   Of the dozen or more shots on goal, his was one of the few not directly at the keeper.

Though GOLD did attain a somewhat more coordinated attack in the second half, repeatedly getting quality crosses and corner kicks, poor concentration in the MAMBO'S box kept the outcome in doubt 'til the final whistle.  In the closing moments, the experienced KINGS kept the ball in the GOLD defending third for an extended period. And while not surrendering a goal and with it, the victory, CPCC did pay a price with the red card on sweeper and standout defender Jason Murphy.

This would be John Bailey's last appearance in a CPCC uniform.  Now a paratrooper in the US Army, John played with us as a "guest" while home on leave following completion of his paramedic and airborne training.  He leaves this week for his permanent duty station in Europe.  John played on the Spring 2001championship squad.

It is sometimes tough being a coach's son, and I want to thank the members of this team for allowing him to play with us during his time here.   As I said after the match, any one of you who joins our armed forces and comes back with the time and desire to guest play with CPCC will always be welcome to do so as long as I am coach here.

4-28-02
OLD TIMERS Silenced by 5-goal Outburst.

Is there any way to square the outcome of this match, as reflected in the scoring summary, with the sense of concern felt during preparations?   Probably not.  CPCC Gold brought their proven assets-depth, speed, and individual skill-and blended them with a renewed commitment to team play and a mental toughness some may have questioned following the previous Sunday's second half performance against Team Russia.

Of the concerns, none were more real than the numerous injuries.  Though several players were questionable (Benavides, Khaddad, Gadja, Trent), only keeper Jonathan Trent, who aggravated an elbow injury during practice Thursday, was unable to play.  Gold would also have to do without the services of defender Jose Garzon, shown a red card the previous week.

Two players who returned after brief absences would play important roles in this match:  Charles Ukwu, still nursing a twisted ankle, started in goal.   Yahya Rokayak also returned to the lineup after an absence of several weeks.

A 15 minute delay enabled the late-arriving Old Timers to start the match at full strength.  Any thought that Gold would start play in a complacent fashion was quickly put aside when, in the third minute,  Cheikh Khaddad one-touched a perfectly placed cross from Neil Van Dyke in a textbook combination for a 1-0 lead.  Play would continue another 8-10 minutes before the ball entered Gold's defending third.  Gold midfielders showed an early recognition of the space given by the Old Timer defense, and would exploit it throughout the match.  Walter Montes showed the way in the 26th minute with a diagonal over-the-top ball  which  Alex Tariah quickly finished for a 2-0 lead.

Gold took the field in the second half braced for a concerted comeback attempt that would have been given legs but for Ukwu's  lightening quick reaction to a hard shot on goal in the 49th minute.    A few moments later, an alert Alex Tariah victimized the Old Timer keeper by blocking an outlet pass, controlling it, and deftly putting it in goal to push the lead to 3-0.

Now firmly in control, Gold players bore down on the business of putting a physical opponent away.  By continuing the attack, fresh combinations were developed.  Yahya Rokayak and Walter Montes combined for the final two goals.  Montes assisted Rokayak in the 59th minute-Rokayak assisted Montes in the 63rd!

Take a snapshot of this match and put it in your sports dictionary beside the definition of "physical challenge", for that is what the Old Timers repeatedly presented.  And for CPCC Gold, there was no backing down.

On the sidelines, the assembled Ali Baba players took a moment from their warm-ups to watch the match's final moments.

GOLD Completes Doubleheader Sweep With 2-0 Win.

As a new team to the league, little was known about NC-United, other their tie with league-leading Ali Baba in the season opener.

Given the heat and the player losses due to injuries and work schedule conflicts, the arrival of a fresh Alex Tariah was a welcome sight.  He would join Wil Owens up front in replacing Mike Malloy and the injured Cheikh Khaddad.  Brandon Arnold started in the midfield in place of Walter Montes.

Matt Simcox took control of the midfield early in this match and never let go.  His disciplined passing and solid defense anchored an effort that ranks among the finest of the season to this point.  Alex Tariah and
Wil Owens applied constant pressure on the United defense, and in the 14th minute, Tariah scored on a hard shot from the 18.  One scary moment came when Neil Van Dyke collided with the United keeper.  Van Dyke came off the field in great pain, but thankfully was able to return to action a few minutes later at full speed.

A red card on Jose Garzon in the final minutes of the first half came seemingly out of the blue, and provided the first real cause for concern.   Suddenly, the comfort level was lowered several notches.

With Tariah drawn in to the midfield for the second half, Gold became somewhat less ambitious on the attack, treating each possession with great care.  In the 46th minute,  John Bailey brought the ball down near the midfield stripe, beat one United midfielder, then split two defenders for a showdown with the keeper.  As the ball punched the back of the net, everyone on the pitch seemed to realize the decision had been reached.

4-21-02
GOLD Holds On as Empire Strikes Back.

With the cancellation of Tuesday night's rain make-up matches, this day would be the first of a series of Sundays in which one team would play a regularly scheduled match plus a make-up game.  As temperatures nudged into the mid-80s by kickoff, it seemed perhaps inopportune that CPCC should take the first turn. The depth of the Gold squad was to be an important factor in the day's success.

For much of the first half, Team Russia was repeatedly caught off balance by the speed of the Gold attack.  Even so, Gold's first score came on a PK,  successfully converted by Neil Van Dyke after being taken down in the box on one of his many runs down the right flank.  Team Russia's failure to adjust allowed Van Dyke to score again less than 10 minutes later, this time from the field.

The second half began with Gold in control, and when Mike Malloy scored just two minutes into the half on an assist by John Bailey, the cruise control switch was flipped to the "on" position.  But with a calm determination, Team Russia began to assert themselves.  In the 49th minute, Jason Murphy was called for pulling a Russian down in the far left corner of the penalty area, and the PK was converted to a goal.  Five minutes later, Murphy gained redemption as he motored down the field with the ball, beating the Russian keeper with a well placed shot for a 4-1 Gold advantage.

Still, Team Russia would not fold, notching goals in the 59th and 65th minutes, bringing on a pronounced discomfort in the final minutes of a match that at one point seemed a blowout.

It was a hot, tired, and somewhat disorganized Gold squad that paid well-earned respects to the players of Team Russia.  With less than 2 hours to recover, Cheikh Khaddad unavailable after going down with  a blow to the knee in the first half, Mike Malloy and Walter Montes lost to work schedule conflicts, and a couple of other players AWOL, there was plenty of concern for Gold chances in the second match.

A fresh, confident NC-United awaited.

Series of "Firsts" Helps Gold to First Win of Season.

Another large group of supporters were on hand for CPCC's second match of the season, which was played on a warm spring Sunday afternoon at McAlpine Greenway Park. They witnessed another stage in the evolution of a team, as CPCC Gold garnered several season firsts: First goal, first victory, and first shutout.

Gold dominated play for all but a few stretches of this match, increasing the pressure as the game clock advanced.  The defensive back four began to function as a unit.  Eddie Benavides started the game in goal, then moved to his usual stopper position for the second half.   Jonathan Trent took over keeper duties at the start of the second half.  Only when Trent faced a PK in the ~57th minute was the shutout seriously threatened.

Noticeable improvement was displayed in the midfield as well, where each player accepted more defensive responsibility while improving the quality of communication.  Better spacing and timing of through-balls and runs were the result. Gold forwards seemed to be more aware of the need to create space for teammates, and more early shots were taken.

The first goal of the season was a low drive to the far post by first-year forward Cheikh Khaddad, providing Gold with a 1-0 halftime lead.  The second half scoring was started by a clever header by Alex Tariah from a cross by Neil Van Dyke at the 48th minute.  The goal came during a period in which Gold had several prolonged possessions in the Mambo Kings defending third.  The third and final score was set up by a nicely played ball by Juan Cevallos down the left side, where  it was collected and delivered it across the box to a waiting trio of Gold players virtually escorted it into the goal.

Congratulations on a satisfying win which provided a glimpse of what this team can accomplish!

Defense Disappoints in Season Opener.

The showing of support from friends, family, and fans for our season opening match was tremendous.  Everyone on the club felt buoyed throughout the match while playing a truly formidable opponent.

Any illusions some may have had concerning the strength of our league, or the amount of improvement needed in order to be competitive in it, were quickly dispelled as Ali Baba dominated Gold 4-0 in our season-opening match.

With the absence (anticipated) of veteran sweeper Jason Murphy, new players struggled to find their role in assisting Eddie Benavides in the central defense.   Not surprisingly, the unfamiliarity factor   pervaded every aspect of the team's effort this first Sunday.  Even so, there were several bright spots in our play.  Notably, we began to generate scoring opportunities in the second half, and we did respond quickly to dead ball situations.  But a team commitment to defense was never really apparent.

All who played in or watched our opening match seemed to agree this team has real potential.   Only time will tell if its members possess the dedication to one another and to the team to realize it by June.
