Championship Match Report
CPCC "Gold Sunday" defeats Wailers 4-2 in Tournament Final!

CPCC GOLD won the tournament championship of the Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation Adult Soccer League with a 4:2 win Sunday (6-17-01) against the Wailers United.

CPCC opened the regular season with a 1:4 loss to the Wailers. A second regular season meeting ended 0:4.

CPCC reached the tournament final with a win the previous Sunday (6-10-01), eliminating the Mambo Kings on PKs. The Wailers semifinal victim was FA United, an upset winner over the higher seeded Rivals. It was the first appearance for CPCC in a competitive division P&R league championship match in 11 years.

08:00
Raed Mohamed surprises the keeper with a free kick from 35 yards away with a rocket just under left crossbar-a shocking goal. Visibly energized, GOLD would play outstanding defense over the remainder of the half. CPCC 1:0 Wailers.

16:00
Raed Mohamed completely freezes the keeper with some close-in fakery, creating an easy shot to the back of the net.
CPCC 2:0 Wailers.

44:00
Keith Koteles, whose runs have taken him deep into the Wailer box for almost the entire half, beats a swarm of defenders to the ball to put away a nifty shot for a stunning 3-goal lead just before the halftime whistle!
Halftime Score: CPCC 3:0 Wailers.

SECOND HALF
The inevitable barrage began almost at the whistle. GOLD defenders, anchored by Ayub Maye at sweeper, erase numerous Wailer probes.

58:00
Adam Mathis is shown a red card for a perceived retaliatory gesture. Mathis' midfield play had set the table for one of the most successful offensive 45 minutes in recent CPCC soccer history.

66:00
The Wailers first goal...
CPCC 3:1 Wailers

71:00
...was soon followed by a second.
CPCC 3:2 Wailers.

72:00
As the match entered its final furious moments, a rotation of solid defenders - Norman Alvarido, Eddie Benevides, Justin Dyess, Ayub Maye, Jason Murphy, and Jordan Nabb - played with poise, quickness, and heart. With John Bailey moved into the middle and Keith Koteles drawn in, Wailer runners were relocated and tracked. Midfielders Walter Montes, Chad Rogers, and Eduardo Bruel continued to contest every important through pass.

When a fresh Roger Stewart was inserted back into his forward spot, replacing Keith Koteles in the 85th minute, GOLD midfielders immediately sought the advantage. Several well placed balls had Wailer defenders racing toward their own goal.

88:00
A split second and a few feet was all Raed Mohamed would need to administer the coup de gras. A hat trick for Raed, and a championship for CPCC GOLD.
Final Score - CPCC 4:2 Wailers!
