Fall 2011 Tournament Recap
Congratulations to Team 5, winner of the 2011 Fall CPCC Futsal Tournament Championship! With Nick Jones as captain, the team in the powder blue established their dominance early in the season, earning a top seed in the postseason tournament, where they eventually met the high-performing red shirts of Team 2 Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, in the tournament final. In a match which proved worthy of a championship competition, Team 5 set the tone with a goal in the first minute of play, adding another to post a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. Thusly challenged, Team 2 responded with four unansered goals in the second period to take a 4-2 lead. Then, Katie Waring struck with two minutes remaining to pull Team 5 back to within a goal at the close of the second period (4-3). Katie's second goal, this one opening the third period, leveled the match at 4-4, and ignited a three goal outburst that would decide the issue. Team 2 competed until the final buzzer, adding a goal in the closing minutes for the 7-5 final.
The tournament final was a fitting close to the club's second successful futsal season, one in which more than 60 CPCC students competed each week. As in the spring, the league included Street Soccer 945, the soccer/futsal club sponsored by Urban Ministries. This article, published by The Charlotte Observer, focused on Street Soccer 945, and provided readers a rare glimpse into a CPCC Student Life activity.
