About the Book:

Following the success of her first book, Richard’s Key, Sandi Huddleston-Edwards captivates her readers once again with this poignant, revealing sequel. We are guided gently by the hand through monumental tragedies that are sure to test the faith of adults, much less six small children. Circumstances in childhood raise tough questions and even tougher answers. Through these challenges emerge strength, courage, and a devotion to God that transcends generations despite the devastation that shaped their lives.

About the Author:

Sandi Huddleston-Edwards has a passion for writing. Even as a child, she spent her summer vacations in her bedroom reading and writing poems and short stories. Her favorite reads were Little Women and Black Beauty.

Sandi is a local talent and a native of North Carolina. Born in High Point, she grew up in Durham. Today she resides in Huntersville. After earning her A.A. degree from Central Piedmont Community College, she attended the University of North Carolina – Charlotte, where she earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees in English. As a life-long learner, she enjoys teaching others the art and science of writing by teaching part-time at Montreat College and Johnston & Wales University. Sandi enjoys teaching English classes.

While researching the paternal side of her family, Sandi was intrigued to learn more about a young uncle whose passionate goal in life was to become a minister. His story inspired Sandi’s first novel, Richard’s Key. She returns to the CPCC Press with Roy’s Sandman, the sequel.

When not pursuing her passions for writing and teaching, Sandi loves to travel, especially to Paris, Charleston, and San Francisco, “the three prettiest cities on the earth.” In addition to spending time with her husband, Barry, hearing her son, Jeremy, preach, and playing with her Yorshire Terrier (Neely), she enjoys re-discovering the world through the eyes of her three grandchildren – Chase, Chesney, and Railey – and her great niece and namesake, Kayley Raye Standifer.

Reviews:

A Southern edition of Mitch Albom, Roy's Sandman reads like two old friends sittin on a porch swing swapping the stories that have shaped their lives, stories that evoke emotions of sorrow and comfort, disappointment and surprise, anger and laughter, bitterness and forgiveness, tears of love lost and tears of love found.

If you have ever doubted that one incident in life can impact generations to come—your doubts will disappear after reading this book. Roy’s Sandman is a sequel to Richard’s Key and provides clear insight into the lives of a family that experienced many tragedies. While visiting Richard's little grave, covered with leaves in such a way someone might think he's been forgotten, I knew better because I've read these books.  Richard's influence lives on in the lives of his descendants and now in these pages. You will laugh, cry and be encouraged by Roy’s Sandman.

Roy's Sandman is a beautiful illustration of redeeming grace.  Roy's relentless love for his family at a tender young age is inspiring as he assumes his role as "Pop.”  He ultimately continues his role of support, love, and care when he is grown and takes on the same responsibilities in his relationship as father to Sandman.  It is a story of forgiveness, blessings, and closure brought forth through a single young man.  Roy truly lived his strengths that have been bestowed by God on each and every one of us.  These strengths brought final closure, an opportunity we all receive but sometimes never experience.

Roy’s Sandman is a touching look at an American family; the highs, lows, and all those times in between. Ms. Huddleston-Edwards’ strong faith shines through her and her characters. It’s a definite read.

Roy's Sandman fulfills all the promise and wonder that was generated in Richard’s Key.  Each of Richard's siblings become real, their hopes, their fears, their loves, their faith and their faults, but most of all, their triumphs.  Roy is given the name of "Pop" by his brothers and sisters shortly after their arrival at Barium Springs Home for Children.  This is not just a nickname, it was a description of Roy's relationship with his young family.  He was their guardian, their protector, their spokesman, their defender and yes, even their conscience.  This fatherly role remained constant throughout their entire lives.  Roy and Sandman's mutual love is very endearing to me.  I "lost" my father at the tender age of ten. This story has shown me "what could have been.”
