About the Book:

Fondly, Carolyn: Letters to a Young Physician was inspired by a partially fictional young physician, “W”. Each letter encourages the reader to “take time” for a different aspect of healthy practice; time to comfort, to relax with family, to volunteer, to notice beauty, and to advocate. After appearing in Mecklenburg Medicine, a reedited version was published in the North Carolina Medical Board’s journal Forum and on its website: www.ncmedboard.org.

Fondly, Carolyn comes as a breath of fresh air. Each of the letters in the series is filled with friendly suggestions, which, while ostensibly addressed to a new physician, bring thoughtful advice and guidance to us all. I urge you to read Fondly, Carolyn…read and act!”

- E. K. Fretwell, PhD, Chancellor Emeritus,
University of North Carolina, Charlotte

“This correspondence should be required reading for
medical students and residents in all specialties. These
letters could be an invaluable resource.”

- Barbara Schneidman, MD, MPH
Past President, Federation of State Medical Boards

“I would have made Dr. Hart’s series of letters to a young physician mandatory reading for all interns and residents.”

- Bryant L. Galusha, MD, Past Director of Education, Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte

“It is a marvelous read. Every doctor should take it to heart.”

- Ferrol A. Sams, Jr., MD
