Award winning published author and playwright, Irania was born in Caracas, Venezuela. Introduced to music and dance at an early age, Irania developed an interest in theatre as a child. In 1983, she wrote and directed her first play entitled “La Vida En Blanco y Negro” (Life in Black and White). Through theatre, she was introduced to her love of writing. In 1992, Irania graduated from Andres Bello Catholic University where she studied Communications. Shortly after graduation, Irania decided to study English and headed to the U.S. where she enrolled in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC). A well rounded published author since 1989, Irania is also a seasoned keynote speaker and storyteller. Irania received her degree in Education from UNC Charlotte in 1995 and a Masters in Children's Literature in 2007 from La Universidad Auonoma de Barcelona and Banco del Libro. She has served as the Bilingual Children’s Coordinator for the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County since 1997. Irania resides in Charlotte, NC with her family. Her bilingual children Samuel and Isabella are her greatest inspiration for writing for children. |
About the Illustrator:
| A multi-media artist and a native of New York City, Catherine attended the High School of Art and Design before earning an Associate degree in Illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology. She continued her studies in Photography and Filmmaking at Temple University in Philadelphia receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1990. Catherine’s interests include Exhibition Design and Mural Painting, which have inspired her to develop and work on a variety of projects with adults and children that link the arts with culture and history, an interest developed while earning a Master of Arts from San Francisco State University’s School of Creative Arts. In 1999, she was accepted as one of the featured artists in the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation’s Artists in Communities: America Creates for the New Millennium competition. Her career work includes Artists in Education Coordinator at Southern Exposure Gallery in San Francisco, CA and Associate Director of Arts Partnerships for Educational Excellence in Oakland, CA. Previous published works include contributor to Klutz Press’ "The Bead Book", cover designer for Adam David Miller's "Neighborhood and Other Poems" and cover designer for "Legacy of the Panthers". Catherine currently lives in Charlotte, NC with her husband and three children.
