Meet the Officers!

Ariel Sturdivant, President

About Me:
My name is Ariel Sturdivant and I am 20 years old. I was born and raised in Harrisburg, NC. I moved out of my parents house and came to Charlotte when I was 18 years old and been here ever since. I graduated from Central Cabarrus High School in January 2009. I am currently working on my Associates of Art, and planning on transferring Fall 2011. My major is Psychology and my ultimate goal is to obtain my PhD and become a clinical Psychologist. Since I’ve joined Service Club, volunteering has become a passion of mine, and I honestly feel privileged to be apart of this organization.
What qualities do you possess that would make you an ideal candidate for this position?
I am the ideal candidate because I am honest, dependable, and a peoples person. Since I am the treasurer, it is essential that I am an honest person because I am responsible for the club’s money. I am also dependable, and I’ve committed to the position of an officer so I will take it serious and complete all the officer duties. Being a peoples’ person, I am able to connect with almost everyone, which is a vital characteristic while volunteering. All of us have qualities and attributes to bring to the table but I believe the most important quality we all share is our desire to help and serve our community. We are all here to make a difference.
Name one of your strengths:
One of my strengths is my ability to adapt. I am one of those people who just go with the flow. Regardless of where I am at, whom I am with, or what I am doing, I am able to have a good time. I am a Gemini, and we are known to be versatile in our communication. Meaning it isn’t difficult for me to sit down and have an engaging conversation ranging from my peers to the elderly. I’ve learned that this has helped me while volunteering because I am able to converse with any and everyone.
What is your favorite charity/ social issue you feel most passionate about? Why?
A social issue that I feel passionate about is environmental issues due to human activity, such as, climate change, ozone depletion, waste, and energy conservation. I am a strong believer in taking care of our one and only Earth, and preserving our natural environment. The only way this will happen is through a change in public policy, and individual behavior. Like Mahatma Gandhi said, “You must be the change you want to see in the world.”
What is your proudest accomplishment?
My proudest accomplishment is waking up every morning and staying true to myself. Sounds simple, but a lot of people cannot say they do the same. It is not an easy thing to do because majority of my life I let other peoples opinion dictate the way I lived. I remember reading in high school “Self-Reliance” by Ralph Waldo Emerson and he stated “My life is for itself not for a spectacle.” This is a quote I carried with me until today. Once you know who you are the opinion of others will not sway you. I believe self-discovery is the key to all happiness. And to me, achieving happiness is the greatest accomplishment anyone could ask for.
If you could take 3 things with you onto a deserted island, what would they be?
Undoubtedly, I would need a book on how to survive because I honestly would not know where to start on how to obtain food, or build shelter. The next thing I would need is a lifetime supply of my favorite candy, Hot Tamales. Without these I would most likely have withdrawals that would lead me into depression, which consequently would make it difficult to survive. The last thing I would need is a picture of my family. To keep hope alive of surviving I would have to see my parents and siblings beautiful faces daily. I know this would push me to keep striving to live.
