The Pitch: We are a specialty food company and catering service that specializes in authentic ethnic foods. Our premier product is Sadie's Caribbean Fish Cakes, which is an all natural seafood appetizer derived from a family recipe and sold in specialty food stores in North Carolina and online. Sadie's Daughter Catering offers menu items from Caribbean, Spanish and Asian cuisine inspired by the food that I personally love to mix and match when I entertain.
Q: When and why did you decide you wanted to be an entrepreneur?
I decided that it was time to pursue a longtime goal and bring my ideas to the marketplace back in 2007 after losing my job. I have had the privilege of working with and for successful attorneys, managers and entrepreneurs, but I have always wanted to own my own business.
Q: How did you get your start-up funding?
My start up funding came from personal savings and family.
Q: What is the most challenging aspect of owning your business?
The most challenging aspect of owning my business is what most small businesses face traditionally and especially in this economic climate, and that is cash flow.
Q: Looking back, how did the Small Business Center assist you in the development or growth of your business?
The course offerings at the Small Business Center helped me examine the necessary components of successful startups. Once I decided to go forward, I was able to take courses on specific subjects as needed. I also utilized the one-on-one business counseling sessions which helped me refine some of my marketing efforts.
Q: What advice would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs?
Spend time researching the market you intend to serve and how your product or service will reach your ideal customer.
