Criminal Justice

The following is a list of in service courses being offered by CPCC's Law Enforcement Division.  The list will be updated as needed, so check back for changes or additions.  The course list includes the tentative dates and times of the class, a brief course description, any special requirements or alternative course locations and the instructor(s).  You can click on the instructor's page to review instructor bios.

The on line registration system has been discontinued, so if you are interested in attending a class, please submit a registration request email via the internet to the CCE Program Developer Major Patricia Brown (patricia.brown@cpcc.edu) or to the Public Safety Program Assistant Mary Ferracci (mary.ferracci@cpcc.edu).  You can also fax the completed registration form to (704) 330-4130.  Click here to download the course registration form.

Achieving Excellence in Public Safety Leadership

Course Number: PSX-8015-01
Course Date: March 18-19, 2010
Course Time: 0800-1700
Location: CPCC North Campus, Rm#131

Prerequisite for the Course: Students must currently be serving in a mid-level to an upper management position. Preferably, commissioned officers, crew chiefs and above, fire captains and above and community corrections district managers and above.

Description: This course covers the essential theory and practical skills for successful leadership in mid to upper level positions. Topics of discussion include, leadership responsibilities, communicating effectively, motivating employees and developing teams. Students will reflect on their leadership styles, strengths and weaknesses. Students will be able to process change and learn about different influencing styles of leadership.

Executive Protection Course

Course No: PSX8020-22
Date & Time: March 1 - 5, 2010 - 0800 to 1700.
Location: CPCC North Campus

This course is designed to provide officers with the skills, knowledge and ability to provide security for individuals of a high profile. This course will teach the student methods to protect subjects from harm in a permissive area. The student will be instructed on methods of advance planning, moving principals on roadways, highways and parades.

Gang Behavior and Community Relations

Course Number: PSX-8045-01
Date & Time: March 11, 2010 - 0800 to 1700.
Location: CPCC North Campus, Room CJ131

This eight-hour course is designed to train Law Enforcement, Corrections, and Division of Community Corrections to apply behavioral science to investigations of juvenile violence and gang behavior. Topical discussions include factors contributing to:

  • school violence
  • risk predictors
  • juvenile offenders
  • solvability factors
  • social behavior of prison and street gangs
  • gang violence
  • various types of gangs
  • trends and resources
  • investigative techniques

In addition, the instructor will discuss Field Investigators and Intelligence Officer’s basic concepts pertaining to the history, social behavior, ideology, personality, and criminal predictors associated with various violent criminal organizations.

ICS 300 provides training on and resources for personnel who require advance application of the Incident Command System (ICS). The course expands upon information covered in the ICS 100 and ICS 200 courses.

ICS 400 Course

Officer Survival

Course Number: PSX8020-23

This course will give officers information and practical experience when dealing with statistically the most dangerous types of situations law enforcement officers incur during everyday response to service.

RADAR Operator

Location: CPCC North Campus, Room 119

The RADAR/LIDAR Operator Course is a State certification course. Officers will receive classroom instruction on the use of RADAR/LIDAR and will required to participate in practical exercises utilizing RADAR/LIDAR equipment. Upon course completion officers will receive a RADAR/LIDAR certification from the State allowing them to operate RADAR/LIDAR in North Carolina

Date & Time: June 21-22, 2010 - 0800 to 1700
Location: CPCC North Campus.

This course is designed to re-certify Radar Operators and LIDAR Operators. Participants who are RADAR only should also attend. The principal methods of instruction are lecture and demonstration. Current certification as probationary or general status as a law enforcement officer and certification as a radar operator within the three years preceding the completion of this course are prerequisites for enrollment. Course includes field practice and testing, both written and practical. Students are required to pass a State certification exam.
PLEASE NOTE: Students in SMI recertification classes are not provided manuals. Students must bring their supplied manual from their certification course, purchase one from the NCJA Bookstore or borrow a manual.

Roadside Spanish for Highway Interdiction

Course No: PSX8025-02
Date & Time: Feb 22-25, 2010 - 0800 to 1700 (M-W) and 0800 to 1200(Thursday).

Course Description: This course is designed to train officers on the fifty (50) most common Spanish phrases, commands, questions and statements that are most needed for routine police interactions with Spanish-speaking individuals. The objective of the course is to train basic Spanish to law enforcement at the local, state, and federal levels of government. The curriculum is designed to meet the training needs of law enforcement officers who come into daily contact with Spanish-speaking individuals. Additionally, officers will learn common concealment techniques utilized by drug smugglers who are concealing drugs/currency and ways to detect these techniques.
