Electrical Lineworker Training

Central Piedmont's electrical lineworker training program will provide the academic and field skills to prepare you to become an entry-level electrical lineworker for a private or public utility company. Safety is stressed in every aspect of the job. This program is for those who aren’t afraid of heights or getting their hands dirty. The program is a 16-week course.

  • LIN-7017 Lineworker Orientation

    This class is a 4-hour orientation to the Central Piedmont electrical lineworker program. It includes a program overview and requirements for entering the program. This class is required for all prospective students.

  • LIN-7018 Introduction to Lineworker

    This course prepares you to work as a lineworker in the preparation and repair of electrical utility service. Course topics include basic elements of electricity, overhead pole and electrical line construction, safety codes and applications, electric power system, transformer and meter installations, and exploration of underground electrical distribution. Upon completion, you will gain the necessary skills for employment in various electrical utility industries. Course content aligns with the learning outcomes defined by the Carolinas Energy Workforce Consortium.

    • First Aid/CPR 
    • Flagger 
    • Introduction to Electrical Lineworker (Orientation)
    • Line Construction
    • OSHA 10
    • Pole Climbing
    • Pole Stringing and Wiring
    • Rigging
    • Safety Techniques
    • Transformers

    You will earn a certification upon completion of the CDL Class A, Flagger, First Aid/CPR and OSHA 10 courses. 

    Prerequisite: successful completion of LIN-7017 Lineworker Orientation

  • LIN-7020 Lineworker CDL

    This class has been created exclusively for Central Piedmont’s lineworker program. You will receive instruction related to the North Carolina CDL: safety, vehicle inspection, air brakes, and familiarization with lineworker bucket trucks. You are required to obtain a CDL permit, DOT medical card, and a DOT drug screen once class begins. These documents are required prior to road training with an instructor.

    This course must be taken together with LIN-7018.

    Requirements

    • prerequisite: successful completion of LIN 8000 Introduction to Electrical Lineworker 
    • must:
      • have a high school diploma or GED
      • be at least 18 years old by the first day of class
      • have a valid driver’s license
      • be able to pass a DOT physical and drug test
      • weigh less than 275 pounds due to equipment weight limitations
      • be able to pass a background test
      • be able to lift 75 pounds — materials and equipment will be lifted off of machinery, shelving, and the ground
      • be able to work while in an elevated position
      • be able to handle activities such as pulling, climbing, walking, carrying, or standing for extended periods of time
      • be able to safely work in all types of weather (i.e., rain, ice, snow, high winds, or excessive heat)
