ePortfolio at CPCC

Electronic portfolios have emerged as an innovative and dynamic feature of the 21st century educational landscape. Data from the Campus Computing Survey shows that, nationwide, the number of colleges offering ePortfolio more than tripled between 2003 and 2008. This growth reflects the potential of ePortfolio and its importance to student learning.

While the number of students enrolled in higher education stands at an all-time high, students have increasing difficulty connecting with, and focusing on, their learning. Most see each class unrelated to the next, disregarding information once the class is complete. Because of this, students find it difficult to build on their learning experiences. The ability to document, through the use of ePortfolios, the development of competencies and skills in the classroom shows great potential for retention of students. Across higher education, there is a need to deepen student engagement and learning to ensure that students have the ability to make connections between learning opportunities ultimately leading to the completion of their degrees.

Students with ePortfolios have a single location to collect their work as it is completed. This gives students the opportunity to reflect on their work cumulatively, make connections between classes, and ultimately strengthen the learning process. Equally as important, ePortfolio provides students the opportunity to showcase their work to friends, family, potential employers and four year institutions.
