Creating & Posting Your Syllabus
Creating and Posting Your Class Syllabus
Click here for a model syllabus
- Your syllabus is the most important document in your class. It is the contract between you and your students about the requirements and objectives of the course. In addition, your syllabus provides a guiding reference--a resource to which students and instructional staff can refer for logistical information such as the schedule for the course and office hours, as well as rationale for the pedagogy and course content. Contact your department for more information and specific directions.
- All instructors must publish their syllabi in the online system.
- Click here to access the CPCC Online Syllabi System. The site is secured and requires a CPCC log-in and password.
- If you need assistance with creating, editing or submiting your syllabus view a flash tutorial with narration.
- Many faculty include a link to the Student Code of Conduct in their syllabus. Student Life and Student Code of Contduct.
-
If you have any questions about the online syllabi system call the ITS Help Desk at 704.330.5000, or send an email to cpcc-its.helpdesk@cpcc.edu.
Components of a Syllabus
Your syllabus should include the following items (plus others that you or your division want to include):
1. Instructor information
Your name, office location, telephone, email address, office hours (10/week)
2. Course Description
Include the Combined Course Library description of your course plus any additional information included by CPCC. Obtain this information from your division director.
3. Prerequisites
List all prerequisites for your course. Prerequisites are provided by the division but can also be found in the CPCC catalog. You may have co-requisites to list also, which are required courses that may be taken prior to or with your course.
4. Textbooks
Your division office will give you an instructor’s textbook or authorize you to get textbooks at the bookstore. Be sure to list all texts (& the correct editions) for the course.
5. Nature of Course Content
Include a description of what this course will cover during the semester. Objectives are provided by the division.
6. Grading Policy
Include on your syllabus your grading outline: how the student’s grade will be determined.
7. Attendance
List your personal or division class-attendance policy.
8. Withdrawal
Include the final day in the semester that students can withdraw (the 12th week for full-term course or 6th week for short-term course). These dates are provided in the semester Class Listing Schedule.
*** The College Withdrawal policy will change effective Fall 08 semester.
9. Make-up Policy
Include your policy for making up missed work.
10. Course Requirements
List what the students are expected to do in your class: group projects, oral presentations, number of tests that a student can retake, number of essays that can be resubmitted, etc. Sometimes these items are included in the course objectives; if it’s not clear, the individual instructor needs to be more specific.
11. Final Exam (Date, Place, Time)
The last week of the term is designated as a college-wide final exam week, except for the summer term. A final examination schedule is published each term along with the Class Listing Schedule. Your division director’s office will provide you with specific guidelines regarding the final exam week. Remember to include in your syllabus the date, place, and time of your exam.
** Instructors are not required to give a final exam but if not, must continue to hold class for the full number of hours scheduled.
12. Special Services Certifications
Please include in your syllabus a statement similar to the following (this field is provided by College):
Students who have a documented disability or who think they may have a learning problem may contact the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities in Terrell 219 or may call 704.330.6556 or 704.330.6621. Instructors will provide the necessary accommodation upon advice of that office.
Any other information you think is pertinent to your class. If you have a personal policy on beepers or cell phones, you should include it here.
13. Academic Integrity Policy
This will be provided by the College syllabus template and should be included on your syllabus.
