When attempting to register for an online class, I received a block and a message telling me I have to take the Online Learning Intro before I can register. What is this?

As of January 15, 2019, CPCC has added a new pre-registration requirement for students taking online courses called the Online Learning Intro. Research shows that students who sign up for online courses are often unaware of and/or unprepared for their unique demands (as compared to face-to-face courses).

What is the Online Learning Intro?

The Online Learning Intro is an interactive orientation designed to prepare students to take online courses at CPCC by providing them with the relevant information, skills, and mindset needed to be successful in a fully online course. It is housed in Blackboard (CPCC’s learning management system, which is the system the college uses to deliver online courses). The Online Learning Intro consists of three modules:

  • Online Student Success
  • Blackboard 101
  • CPCC Policies, Procedures, & Support Resources.

Students will have to take a short quiz at the end of each module - currently, these are meant only as knowledge-checks and will not prevent students completing the Online Learning Intro.

Am I required to take it?

If you are taking your first online class at CPCC (or those who have scored less than a "C" or have withdrawn from online classes within the last 3 years) have to take the Online Learning Intro. This includes transfer students and high school students.

Can I get an exemption from taking the Online Learning Intro?

No, students are not exempted from taking the OLI under any circumstances.

How long does it take to complete the Online Learning Intro?

On average, it takes people about 45 minutes to complete the Online Learning Intro.

What do I need to complete the Online Learning Intro?

You will need access to a desktop computer or laptop with internet access, an up-to-date web browser (Chrome or Firefox work best), and working headphones or speakers to complete the Online Learning Intro. Taking the OLI on a smartphone or tablet is not encouraged.

What happens when I complete the Online Learning Intro?

After completing the quiz in the third module, students should receive a confirmation message in the form of an email sent to their CPCC email. From there, students will be allowed to register for online courses within a few minutes.

What should I do if I complete the Online Learning Intro but I’m still prevented from registering for an online class within a few minutes?

Contact the ITS Helpdesk at 704-330-5000 or helpdesk@cpcc.edu.

What if I have technical issues accessing or completing the Online Learning Intro?

Contact the ITS Helpdesk at 704-330-5000 or helpdesk@cpcc.edu.

What if I realize that online learning is not for me and choose not to register for any online classes during or upon completion of the Online Learning Intro?

You should still have the option to register for seated (face-to-face) equivalents of online classes.

What if, after completing the Online Learning Intro, all the sections of class I was trying to register for are full?

If all online sections of your desired class are full, first check to see if there are any Hybrid or Seated (face-to-face) sections available. If not, then schedule an appointment with an advisor to find out what other options are available to you.

Are there any training opportunities for the online learning systems?

Yes, there are optional face-to-face; on-campus Blackboard/Moddle practice sessions. They are a great opportunity to have an instructor-led introduction to the Learning Management Systems. Learn More.
