Surgical Technology
Description
Our Surgical Technology curriculum prepares professionals to assist in the care of the patient in the operating room and to function as a member of the surgical team. Students apply theoretical knowledge to the care of patients undergoing surgery and develop skills necessary to prepare supplies, equipment, and instruments; maintain aseptic conditions; prepare patients for surgery; assist surgeons during operations. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Certification Examination for Surgical Technologists (CST). Employment opportunities include labor & delivery departments, hospital inpatient/outpatient surgery centers, dialysis units/facilities, physician’s offices, and central supply processing units.
Degree Awarded
The Associate of Applied Sciences (AAS) in Surgical Technology is awarded by the College upon graduation from the program.
Note
In addition to tuition and textbooks and supplies, costs of this program includes the following: uniforms , OSHA approved medical safety glasses, student picture ID, a physical examination including 9 panel drug screening test, immunizations such as tetanus toxoid, hepatitis B vaccinations, TB test, blood test (i.e., VDRL, rubella titer, etc.), and current CPR with AED certification. The student must provide a certificate of health and accident insurance.
In order to progress in this program, students must earn a C or better in all curriculum courses.
In order to participate in clinical education experiences at health care facilities, students are required to submit results of a national criminal background check at their own expense. As a condition of program admission, students may be required to verify that they are United States citizens or are otherwise legally authorized residents of the United States

Admissions
· Complete a CPCC application.
· Application for 2009 Admission (click here).
· Submit high school transcripts and any college transcripts.
· Take required placement Accuplacer tests. Acceptance requires reading score of at least 80.
· Meet with counselors in Central High 212.
· Complete at least high school Biology, Anatomy, or Microbiology, or college biology (BIO111 or higher) with a C or better within the last 5 years.
· Applicants must also present evidence of good physical and mental health.
· Many courses have prerequisites or co requisites; check the catalog for details.

Transfer Policy
This policy applies to the student who is seeking transfer into the Surgical Technology program. The policy gives consideration to the student who has been enrolled in an CAAHEP accredited surgical technology program elsewhere, has successfully completed one or more surgical technology courses by earning a letter grade of C or better, is seeking to continue and complete the Associate Degree Surgical Technology Program at Central Piedmont Community College. A minimum of 21 credit hours must be earned at CPCC for degree conferment. Transfer consideration is based on space availability and completion of skills validation. ST-AAS Bridge Option
This option is designed for the working surgical technologist who desires to advance their professional career by obtaining their Associates in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Surgical Technology. Entrance requirements consist of completion of the standard surgical technology program application process, and transcript evaluation and transfer credits awarded for previous college work. Applicants must be presently employed as a surgical technologist in an acute care facility or free standing surgical practice. Applicants must be a graduate of a CAAHEP accredited surgical technology program, and be currently certified as a surgical technologist (CST) by the NBSTSA. Applicants must meet the same medical, immunization, drug screen, and criminal background requirements.
Surgical technology courses required for this option are SUR137, SUR210, and SUR211. Students will be required to either complete or have transfer credit for the general education and other required courses. A minimum of 21 credit hours musts be earned at CPCC for degree conferment.
