Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) leaders, together with faculty and staff, students, alumni and other supporters, will gather at the college’s Health Careers Building on June 8, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of CPCC’s Dental Hygiene Program. During the reception, hosted by the CPCC Foundation, attendees will mingle, enjoy a variety of hors d’oeuvres and take a tour of the college’s state-of-the-art Dental Hygiene Clinic.

“The longevity of our Dental Hygiene Program speaks to the caliber of the curriculum, faculty and staff,” said Lisa List, division director of Health Sciences at CPCC. “CPCC’s Dental Hygiene Program has withstood the test of time, and that’s because it has remained committed to the college’s mission – to provide a high quality, affordable and accessible education to all.”

CPCC’s Dental Hygiene Program was established in 1965 and graduated its first cohort in 1967. Since its inception, the program has contributed close to 1,300 graduates to the Mecklenburg County workforce and grown in popularity. On average, the program receives more than 160 applications each year to fill its 30 available seats. This high demand can be attributed to the quality of the program. Students learn from experienced faculty in state-of-the-art classrooms, including an on-site dental clinic featuring 27 operatories. As a result, the program is renowned for preparing aspiring dental hygienists for success, boasting a 96-100 percent pass rate on the national board exam, as well as a 100 percent job placement rate.

“I am extremely proud of everything the program has accomplished in its 50-year history and am excited about what the next 50 years will bring,” said Dr. Ruth Hedgpeth, dean of Nursing, Health & Human Services, Teacher Education, and Cosmetology at CPCC.
