Sara Dir

Sara Dir, a student at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) and a resident of Charlotte, N.C., is the recipient of a N.C. Community College System (NCCCS) Academic Excellence Award, which will be awarded at the organization’s 2012 Excellence Event – “The Great Within the 58” – on April 19 in Raleigh, N.C.

The award recognizes academic achievement, leadership and community service in one student from each of the 58 institutions in the NCCCS. Recipients must be currently enrolled in curriculum courses, completing at least 12 credit hours in an associate degree program and maintaining a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25.

A native of Toronto, Dir exceeds the award’s requirements. She is currently working toward completing her Associate of Arts degree, studying education and languages; maintains a 4.0 grade point average; is actively involved in the College’s Student Government Association (Vice President) and Phi Theta Kappa chapter; and serves as a part-time office assistant in the English Department.

“I am honored to nominate Sara for this award,” said Amanda Capobianchi, associate dean for Student Life at CPCC. “She is a strong leader – both inside and outside the classroom – and is dedicated to her classes and to her educational pursuits. She also consistently goes beyond expectations, regularly assisting with campus programs and service events, and making others feel welcome and included. She embodies everything this award symbolizes.”

Adds Sara, “CPCC helped me achieve the Academic Excellence Award’s high standards. Thanks to the College and its faculty, I have learned that my success is a steppingstone to making myself, and the world around me, better. I plan to use what I have learned to help others on their life path and am confident that the small steps I have taken at CPCC will guide me in the right direction as I chart my personal and professional goals.”
