The College and Career Readiness Department at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) has launched Rise 2 Work, a Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services and North Carolina Division of Health and Human Services program that seeks to connect low-income residents with the education and training opportunities they need to secure a better-paying job or family-sustaining career.

Rise 2 Work is a federal, grant-funded program that is available to individuals enrolled in Mecklenburg County’s Food & Nutrition Services Employment and Training Program who want to increase their skills, earn new credentials, boost their career possibilities and contribute to their family’s financial well-being. To be eligible, residents must qualify to receive SNAP/EBT/Food Stamps assistance and be able to work.

CPCC’s team will use the grant funding to offer career-based continuing education courses, curriculum courses and/or GED/High School Equivalency programs for qualifying students. Fees associated with tuition and books, as well as some transportation and supplies, may be covered through scholarships as part of the program as well.

“CPCC is committed to offering programs that help low-income residents create upward mobility in their lives,” said Karen Pauly, dean of College and Career Readiness at CPCC. “Rise 2 Work helps us accomplish this goal. The grant monies will help us not only provide academic assistance to in-need students, but also grant them access to the scholarship funds, advising and support services they need to be successful both at home and in the workforce.”

Residents interested in learning more about the program or seeing if they meet the program’s requirements are invited to attend an orientation/information session each Wednesday at 10 a.m., in Room 110 of the CPCC Education Center, located on CPCC’s Central Campus at 1412 East 4th St.
