STEM-S Initiatives

Almost 90 percent of new jobs require more than a high school level of math skills. Therefore it’s imperative that today’s graduates be mathematically literate.

With this statistic in mind, CPCC made a strategic decision to merge its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and Sustainability divisions together in 2009 to create STEM-S.

Now the largest department at CPCC with more than 32,000 students enrolled annually, STEM-S is contributing to the strength of Mecklenburg County’s scientific, mathematical, environmental and technological labor force. CPCC’s curriculum focuses on STEM-related initiatives while infusing sustainability into its many courses. This format allows the College to develop academic and job training programs that respond to the immediate needs of the local workforce, while producing enough graduates to sustain job growth in these “hot” industries.
