Competition Rules
Competition Rules
1. Only CPCC students enrolled in a selected math course in the Spring 2007 semester who have received this notice in class or via e-mail are eligible to participate.
2. The competition will consist of one problem per week for 13 weeks, starting the 2nd week of the semester. Each problem is worth 1 point.
3. Each week’s problem will be sent out on TUESDAY via e-mail as a Word document attachment. All answers must be submitted via e-mail and must be submitted by midnight on the following MONDAY. The answer & solution to the previous week’s problem will be sent out by Thursday.
4. The first problem will be sent to ALL eligible students. Subsequent problems will be sent only to those students who sign up for the competition. Submitting an answer in the correct format to the 1st problem before the deadline is the only way to sign up for the competition. If you want to participate in the competition but cannot solve the first problem, make your subject line “POW Answer: ENTER ME.” Once you have signed up, you will be in the competition for the remainder of the semester, regardless of whether you continue to participate.
5. You must provide a valid e-mail address to participate and you must use the same e-mail address for the entire semester. There will be no deadline extensions or other special considerations given if you fail to receive e-mail due to a problem with your account. It is your responsibility to manage your e-mail account and make sure it is working at all times.
6. You only have to submit your final answer, not your work. All answers are NUMERIC only.
7. Submit your answer via e-mail using the following format:
To: laura.tucker@cpcc.edu
Subject: POW Answer: {type answer here}
The body of your e-mail should contain the following information:
Name:
E-Mail Address: {this only needs to be included with your answer to week #1’s problem}
Instructor:
Math Course & Section #: {for example, MAT172-02}
Week #: {type the week # of the competition as stated in the problem}
8. You may submit only one answer per problem. If you submit 2 or more different answers, none of them will be counted.
9. Your entry will NOT be counted if it is submitted late, if it is sent to the wrong e-mail address, and/or if the subject line isn’t in the correct format (e.g., POW Answer: {type answer here}).
10. Participants must solve the problem without receiving any help whatsoever from anyone else. Participants will be disqualified for receiving help. Participants may, however, consult textbooks, mathematics dictionaries, and mathematical encyclopedias. Participants may also use calculators.
11. In the event of a tie for one or more awards, a problem set will be sent out to the affected participants. If there is still a tie afterwards, names will be drawn from those who are still tied.
Textbook Scholarships generously provided by our competition sponsor, CP Textbook located at 214 E. Independence Blvd. (www.CPTextbooks.com) Additional awards provided by the Math Division Faculty.
