Letter to Faculty & Staff from Richard Zollinger
| Learning College Idea: Social learning experiences, such as peer teaching and group projects, especially those that encourage group construction of knowledge, allow a student to observe other students model successful learning. For example, one art teacher asks students to critique the work of their peers. Students outline the rationale supporting their critique and then decide as a group an overall rating for each work under review. This experience challenges students to articulate their reasoning beyond a simple, “I like it.” |
October/November 2009
Only a few short days away from mid-semester break! It is hard to believe that the first part of the fall semester has gone by so fast. The semester got off to a good start. I want to thank all of you who have helped accommodate record enrollments. Many of you volunteered to help students with registration; faculty increased class capacity; division directors added additional sections in high-demand areas; program and discipline chairs recruited part-time instructors; in short, everyone has helped shoulder the extra workload. This has been done with a spirit of teamwork. My sincere thanks to all of you!
Core4
I am particularly excited about the progress of the Learning College’s Core4 initiative. The Core4 initiative is an important component of our ongoing Learning College plan. The Core4 have been identified as critical to the success of CPCC graduates. We are five years into this effort and have made significant progress. However, we still have much that remains to be done. During this academic year, the Core4 teams will complete their review of courses to ensure that all implementation forms are complete and available through the online database. The Student Learning Evidence Team, a committee of faculty from various programs and staff, is also piloting the use of an ePortfolio as a tool to document student learning in the Web Technologies program. The team is working with ITS to determine the requirements for an online portfolio platform, and those recommendations will be shared and additional input requested spring semester. Beginning this year, the Core4 will become a part of the program review process. Faculty will be asked to consider the Core4 when they identify student learning outcomes for the programs up for review.
I hope I can count on your support as we move forward with this important initiative.

H1N1 Accommodations
By now we all know that the H1N1 precautions are centered on prevention. The College has put out information in the Communicator and you have doubtless seen preventive measures published in the newspapers, on the Internet, and heard them discussed on television and radio. I encourage you to continue working with your students in a way that, while consistent with your attendance policies, also shows understanding of challenging situations.
Finally, allow me to thank all of you for the support I have received during my first months as your Vice President for Learning. Part of the purpose of a learning college is to create an environment for learning. You truly have done that for me as I continue to learn about the many things you do at the College and as we meet challenges together. Let us all remain positive as we move forward into the second half of the semester. My door is open if I can be of assistance to you.
NOTE: Any documents that need to be posted on the Learning website should be sent to Patricia.Williams@cpcc.edu (unless otherwise noted on the website and/or document).
