Dear colleagues in the Learning & Workforce Development Unit,

I welcome you to a very exciting new year. Although we always try to keep things quiet during the summer, we found ourselves taking advantage of many new opportunities.

First, I would like to welcome all new faculty and staff members. During my interviews with these candidates, I was energized by the expertise, knowledge, and passion for learning that each new faculty member brings to the College.  Along with the numerous talents of existing staff, these new team members will help support ongoing student success initiatives and new programs.

We are happy to report that the Cosmetology Program will admit 40 students this fall (pending SACSCOC approval) with a planned expansion in enrollment for spring semester. Also, we are in the final stages of opening the new, state-of-the-art Cosmetology facility located at our City View Center.  The Ophthalmic Medical Assistant Program is finalizing the installation of equipment in new laboratories. Enrollment is already at capacity! Our Emergency Medical Services Program, formed in partnership with Carolina Medical Services, is growing steadily with future plans to offer an associate degree.

A significant opportunity that will impact the College over the next several years is the upcoming $210 million bond referendum. If approved by voters, this referendum will allow CPCC to expand several campuses in places where we are at capacity. It will also help support our many K-12 partnerships, as we plan to build two more middle colleges, modeled after the successful Cato Middle College, and create a health academy at the current Hawthorne site. Mecklenburg County residents will vote on the bond referendum on November 5, 2013.

We are particularly interested in exploring competency-based instructional delivery pathways. We have begun the groundwork to ensure that CPCC provides leadership in specific curriculum and continuing education areas.

I would be remiss if I did not mention our upcoming visit from the SACSCOC onsite review team on September 24 – 26, 2013. This important visit will require “All hands on deck!” Dr. Cathey Ross, SACS liaison, will send out more information about the visit as those dates approach.

Finally, I invite you to a very special fall forum on August 22, 2013. Dr. Zeiss has invited Dr. Terry O’Banion, an expert on student success, as a special speaker. Dr. O’Banion’s talk will support many of the student success initiatives at CPCC. The forum will conclude with a spectacular 50th birthday lunch at each of our campuses.
