Workforce Development Student Success Initiatives

Developmental Math Assessment Tool - A diagnostic assessment that identifies gaps in students’ math skills. Developmental Education Initiative - Initiative that supports low-income and students of color to move quickly into college courses, complete and earn a postsecondary credential.Basic Skills + - Funds to develop and implement a customized education program that provides employability skills, job-specific occupation and technical skills and developmental education instruction to ABE students.Partners for Postsecondary Success - Demonstration project focused on increasing the n umber of low-income young adults who earn certificates, degrees, or find employment.Pathways to Employment - Short-term training program designed to launch students on a viable career path.Summer Bridge - A program that helps students successfully transition from high school to college in a closed, structured and supervised environment. Teaches students what will be expected of them in college.Academies - Partnerships with CMS that allow high school students to pursue both a high school diploma and an Associate’s Degree simultaneously. ACA 111 - A student success course that introduces students to the physical, academic, and social environments of the college and promotes personal development.Fast Track Developmental Courses - A self-paced alternative to traditional developmental courses during the regular semester. These courses address the same topics as in their traditional counterparts. Students master those topics in which they are deficient at their own pace.Achieving the Dream - Initiative aims to help more students reach their goals by catalyzing change within Community colleges and in state and federal policy.Carnegie: Stemway/Statway/Quantway - Alternative math pathways that relate to the program plans of the student.QEP - Result - Quality Enhancement Plan required by SACS as a part of the reaffirmation process. The QEP must have significant impact on student learning or the learning environment.Service Learning - Service-Learning is a teaching method which combines community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility.ePortfolio - A collection of electronic evidence of student learning. ePortfolios are electronic demonstrations of student work which add value to the overall student experience, inform program-level learning decisions and support accreditation at program and institutional levels. Program Review - A recurring review of academic programs to determine if student learning outcomes are met, if distance learning is used effectively, if the curriculum is still relevant, and to consider future challenges.E-Learning - Organized delivery of courses by means other than face-to-face classroom contact, such as via internet, information highway, or telecourse.Accelerated Curriculum Completion - Course content offered at an accelerated pace and in a condensed format so that students can more quickly move through courses, especially in developmental courses.Core4 - Competencies that CPCC expects of graduates regardless of their program of study. Communication, Critical Thinking, Personal Growth & Responsibility, and IT and Quantitative Literacy are the competencies identified at CPCC.Completion by Design - Initiative to increase the number of low-income young adults who earn certificates and degrees, targeting students who have earned a HS diploma or GED.Curriculum Mapping - A process for articulating where and when core skills and content are taught and what assessments are used for each course or program.SuperCIP - A curriculum improvement project reviewing the areas of building, energy, engineering technology, environment, and transportation to infuse sustainability and create efficiencies.Partnership with Energy Industry - CPCC is forming close partnerships with energy industry leaders in the Charlotte region to ensure an in-depth understanding of workforce needs to (1) make certain that students learn “in-demand” skills and competencies and (2) provide industry specific information to students as they seek jobs. Wachovia/Wells Grant - CPCC has been awarded a grant to provide scholarships for high impact Corporate and Continuing Education certification programs as well as funding a full-time Career Coach for the Career Professionals Center. WalMart/League Grant - CPCC is one of 8 community colleges to be awarded a Wal-Mart Brighter Futures Grant. This grant provides career services and education to dislocated professionals and paraprofessionals in the area. The grant helped establish the Career Professionals Center and provide student stipends for training programs.ePortfolio - A collection of electronic evidence of student learning. ePortfolios are electronic demonstrations of student work which add value to the overall student experience, inform program-level learning decisions and support accreditation at program and institutional levels. Apprenticeship - is a skilled trade employee training program that combines on-the-job training with technical instruction. The technical education is provided by Central Piedmont Community College and the on-the-job training is provided by an employer. Experiential Learning - The process of learning from direct experience. CPCC provides a number of ways to facilitate experiential learning including internships, externships, and co-ops.Dislocated Worker - Individuals who are unemployed or underemployed due to job loss as a result of economic conditions. Dislocated workers are a target population for many services provided by CPCC.
