Hiring Procedures Full-time Faculty

  1. When a new full-time position is created or an established position becomes vacant, the immediate supervisor should complete a Request to Hire form and submit it to the dean. To initiate the hiring process, the dean will affix the appropriate signature and forward to the VP for Instruction.
  2. All faculty positions that are vacant at the same time will be advertised in a block ad in the education section of The Charlotte Observer and in the Community College Times. For divisions that are underutilized in minorities and/or females, advertisements will be placed in appropriate journals and publications as identified by the Human Resources Department. Advertisements for technical faculty positions may be placed in the Raleigh News & Observer upon approval of the VP for Instruction.
  3. The immediate supervisor will identify members for the search and screen committee and forward the list of members to the Dean. The Dean will forward the list to the VP for Instruction for review and approval. The makeup of the committee will include racial minorities and female representation; at least two members should be selected from outside the division in which the faculty will be housed and at least one member from the program advisory committee, if possible and applicable.
  4. The Human Resources Department will forward all applications received for the position that meet the minimum requirements to the immediate supervisor. The supervisor will review the applications and select the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications for the position. The Director of EEO/AA will review for under-utilization the applicants meeting minimum qualifications. These names will be forwarded to the dean who will review the list with the VP for Instruction.
  5. The immediate supervisor will convene the approved search and screen committee to review the applications of the qualified candidates to determine whom they wish to interview in addition to any applicants that may be requested by the dean and/or VP for Instruction. The immediate supervisor will also notify the Director of EEO/AA as to when and where the first committee meeting will be held. The Director will attend the meeting to give the charge to the committee and to identify any underutilized categories for that particular person.
  6. The search and screen committee will interview the top applicants and will select a minimum of three candidates, identifying their strengths and weaknesses. In the case of faculty positions, the search & screen committee will also arrange for each of the three candidates to videotape a teaching demonstration.
