CREDIT HOURS: 3 Lecture, 2 Laboratory, 4 Credit

Prerequisites: FRE 111 or consent of Division Director.
Corequisites: FRE 182

This course is a continuation of French 111 focusing on the fundamental elements of the French language within a cultural context. Emphasis is placed on the progressive development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Upon completion, students should be able to comprehend and respond with increasing proficiency to spoken and written French and demonstrate further cultural awareness. When registering for this class, students also need to register for FRE 182, French Lab 2. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement general education core requirement in humanities/fine arts.


Students will (1) develop the basic skills of understanding, listening, and speaking in French; (2) begin to develop the basic skills of reading and writing in French; and (3) demonstrate an understanding of cultural similarities and differences.
The goals of individual students will influence achievement levels in these areas of competency. The average student who uses the workbook, textbook, and Lab resources can expect to achieve the following goals by the end of one academic year.

- A student should be able to understand Elementary French spoken at a slower than normal pace and understand some French spoken at a normal pace.
- In terms of speaking, students should be able to answer and ask questions on a variety of everyday topics, describe people and places.
- Many daily routines, such as making phone calls and greeting and leave-taking, should also be well within the average student’s grasp.
- The writing skills that students develop will usually be similar to their speaking skills in terms of ability to describe, narrate in the present, and so on.
- Finally, students will gain a wealth of nearly firsthand knowledge about the various cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.


1. Registration in FRE 182, French Lab.
2. Trip arrangements to France with class as required.
3. Journal kept during extent of stay in foreign country. This is submitted weekly to the instructor.
4. Homestay lodging with native speakers of French.
5. Reflective paper within one week of return.
6. Regular daily attendance in classes at the immersion institute.
7. Fulfill homework assignments from immersion classes.
8. Participate in cultural excursions.
9. Attend group get-togethers planned by CPCC instructor.
10. Take and pass final examination at IFALPES immersion institute in Annecy.
11. A final grade of “C” or better is required for passing to the next level French class.


1. Grading Scale: 90-100=A, 80-89=B, 70-79=C, 60-69=D
2. Final grade will be based on IFALPES Immersion Institute’s assessment (test scores, class participation), weekly personal journal submissions, class attendance, and participation in cultural & host family excursions/experiences
3. NO MAKE UP TESTS will be given.
4. “When a student determines that he/she will be unable to complete courses in which he/she is currently enrolled, it is the student’s responsibility to initiate procedures leading to a formal withdrawal (“W”) in order to avoid failing (“F”) grade. To receive a “W” grade a student must withdraw before the last 25% of the academic term.” Final date for withdrawing is June 14 (first session) or July 13 (second session). “The instructor may also assign “W” at other times when circumstances warrant such action. A “W” will remain on the transcript and will not count as credit hours attempted. To receive credit, a student who received a “W” must re-register and pay for the course in a subsequent term. Financial aid recipients need to refer to the financial aid satisfactory progress policy to determine if schedule adjustments will affect financial aid.”
5. Students who wish to audit a course must complete an Audit Agreement Form which needs to be signed by the instructor and submitted to the Registration Center by the 30% date of the class. Audit Agreement Forms are available at all campuses.


The final grade will be based on the following:
50% IFALPES Immersion Institute’s Assessment (test scores, class participation)
25 % Weekly personal journal submissions & Reflective paper at end of the experience.
25% Class attendance + Participation in cultural excursions/host family experiences

Attendance policy:
Class meets MTWRF.
Regular daily attendance in classes at the immersion institute is mandatory. Any absence must be pre-approved by the instructor. More than two absences during the month could result in failing grade.
