FAQ: Class Email Lists

Q. What is the benefit of student email service to instructors and their students?
A. The primary benefit to faculty and college administration of this system will be the class email lists, facilitating communications from the instructor to the students. All students enrolled in a class will be grouped under an alias. For example all students enrolled in CIS110 Section 01 can be addressed by sending e-mail to CIS110-01@email.cpcc.edu. Faculty and staff may want to add the groups of classes, they are teaching, to their personal address books.

Q. I’m an instructor and some of the students in my class do not receive the emails I send to the group. What could be happening?
A. Emails addressed to an entire class are sent to every student in the course. Students and faculty may contact the ITS Helpdesk for assistance.

Q. Can users on the student email system or outside the college access the class lists?
A. No. Only employees sending email from the College email system can access the email lists.

Q. I am a full time instructor and teach five classes. How can I manage communications for students in each of my classes?
A. We recommend adding the list e.g. CIS110-01@email.cpcc.edu to your address book. Sending an email to this list will automatically send email to all students enrolled in that particular class and section. We also recommend advising your students to put the course number and section (list name) in the subject line of each email they send to you. With the subject line in place you can setup rules in your mailbox to file all messages from that particular class in a folder automatically. Assistance with email rules can be sought at the ITS help desk (5000) or at our web site http://www.cpcc.edu/itservices.

Q. Is there an account I can use as an instructor to show my students how to access their student email?
A. Yes. You may use a demo account to demonstrate the login process by using "demo" as both the username and password.
