Analog to Digital Conversions
ADVISORY
Please be aware that as new Smart Classrooms are being built here at CPCC, a separate DVD/VHS unit will not be placed into the podium. DVD videos may be played using the DVD drive in the computer workstation. However, VHS tapes will no longer be supported in these rooms. Existing DVD/VHS players in older Smart classrooms will also be removed in due time.Analog Media Support Services
VHS cassettes have become accepted as an obsolete technology for video playback. DVD videos, though readily accessible today, will very likely also become obsolete by way of Blu-ray disks as more patrons choose high definition over standard definition video.
Information Technology Services has worked diligently to ensure that important instructional content is not lost as technology advances. Digital Media Services has worked in partnership with many departments to convert over 200 VHS tapes to DVD thus far. In addition to this, where possible, videos have also been converted to web-based video. This process enables more viewers to access videos and also increases the content’s lifespan dramatically.
What does this mean to you?
If you currently use VHS tapes in your classes, we strongly encourage you to review the process below and begin partnering with us in these efforts to retain this video content.
Service Guidelines
Copyright Protected Media
Information Technology Services will not perform or maintain copyright analysis documentation. Departments requesting conversion or manipulation of any media protected under copyright law are required to coordinate and maintain publishing company approvals. Conversion services may not be provided if such approval has not been presented for media that is protected under copyright.
For more information on how to obtain publisher approval, visit our Obtaining Publisher Approvals web page.
If the publishing company provides expressed permissions to convert the title, Digital Media Services will work to facilitate this at little or no cost to the requesting department.
If publisher approval may not be granted, Digital Media Services will work to obtain price quotations for upgraded media. Departments are strongly recommended to purchase available upgrades.
Submitting Requests
Once you have obtained proper permissions to convert media that is protected under copyright, you may enter information about all your analog media so that Digital Media Services may begin conversion processes.
You may submit your inventory via an ONLINE POLL, or by completing a spreadsheet and emailing it to DigitalMedia@cpcc.edu.
You may also review a current list of converted media.
Prioritization of Requests
In addition to quantity of requests, duration of content, as well as instructional availability of media, requests are processed according to the following prioritization:
Conversion and Optimization Prioritization Table | |||
Priority 1 | Urgent Need | Previously converted media has become corrupt or is unusable | Less than 24 hours |
