Through the Early Alert Program, instructors use the  Online Student Profile to refer struggling students to Counseling Services.  Counselors then follow up with students to discuss their goals, assess their needs, and guide them toward resources that can help them achieve success.
For many, an early intervention can make the difference between success and failure. While the Academic Learning Center is appropriate for assistance with improving study habits and testing skills, many students face challenges that go beyond the academic, and instructors often see these needs before anyone else.

What Counselors Provide

Counselors help students who are trying to define their goals or who are wrestling with motivation and focus.  They’re also available to speak with students facing personal crises, emotional struggles, and difficulties with relationships. In addition, Counselors are knowledgeable about a wide range of College and community resources that can benefit students.

Who Should Be Referred

Students who are not being successful academically.
Students who don’t seem to be meeting their potential.
Students who appear to be under significant stress.

When to Make a Referral

The Early Alert Program starts with the assumption that instructors are engaged with their students and conscientiously address their academic needs. However, when students need more than instructors are equipped to provide, a referral should be made as soon as the problem is identified.

When Not to Make a Referral

Threatening or violent behaviors should be responded to by immediately contacting Campus Security (ext. 6911). Likewise, disruptive students and other classroom management issues are addressed by faculty with the assistance of their academic division director, if needed.

How to Make a Referral

Counseling Services has prepared a handout describing the referral process step-by-step.  You can access additional suggestions for reaching out to students online; you are also welcome to discuss your concerns with a Counselor.
Students are more responsive to interventions when their teachers encourage them to follow through. Some faculty may choose to offer an incentive, such as extra credit or an extension on a deadline. Often, it’s enough simply to say, “I want to see you be successful, and I think speaking with a Counselor can help.”
