The Geospatial Technology Center is involved in several efforts to disseminate geospatial education throughout the K-12 and higher education curriculum.

Geospatial Technology and the K-12 Curriculum

The Geospatial Technology Center has created a unique opportunity for high school students in the Union County Public School System and the Charlotte/Mecklenburg Public School System.  The opportunity allows high school students who are at least 16 years of age to take college level courses in GIS that will count towards their high school graduation credits as well as credit towards a degree at CPCC.

Four GIS courses can be taken online while in high school at no cost to the student.  Upon completion of the four courses the student has the opportunity to earn a GIS Certificate from CPCC before ever graduating from high school.  As a result, a high school student is equipped with the necessary skills to compete in the geospatial workforce and is prepared for course work at other higher education institutions.

Geospatial Technology and the Higher Education Curriculum

The Geospatial Technology Center has established agreements with area community colleges, colleges, and universities that allow students and faculty alike access to geospatial education.

Students from Wake Technical Community College and Forsyth Technical Community College can take up to two GIS courses that will count towards a GIS certificate at CPCC.  Once the student completes the two courses at their home institution the remaining three courses can be taken online.  Upon completion, the student is awarded a GIS certificate from CPCC.

Students from CPCC who are taking courses in the Geospatial Technology curriculum program can transfer their course work to Appalachian State University and East Carolina University and receive credit towards a four year degree.
