CPCC and Goodwill Industries Partner for Construction Training Program
In 2007, Central Piedmont Community College and Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont developed an entry level construction job skills training program to address the needs of the construction industry and the local workforce. Having served more than 500 students, this seven-week training program assists individuals in quickly developing the basic knowledge and skills necessary to obtain an entry level position or better in the construction industry. The classes at Goodwill are taught by National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certified instructors. The program covers Green Job training and hands-on training in construction math, blueprint reading and the use of power tools and hand tools. Students obtain OSHA-10 safety cards and are also eligible to receive forklift training and certification. All students receive employability skills training such as resume development, interview skills, communicating effectively and work ethics.
The goals of the class are to increase knowledge of Construction and Green Technology; improve computer skills; develop interpersonal skills; and build financial literacy. The skills students acquire in the class are transferable to other industries such as manufacturing, facilities management, logistics and entrepreneurship pathways. Students may obtain the following positions carpenter helper or day laborer, materials handler and recycling worker at the completion of the program which could lead to the following career paths.
Potential career paths:
- Construction: Carpenter helper > Carpenter > Lead
- Carpenter: Foreman > Superintendent > Management
- Material Management: Material Handler > Team Lead > Lead Shift Supervisor > Supervisor
- Sustainability: Recycling and Waste Reduction > Team Leader > Lead Shift Supervisor > Supervisor
