CPCC Graduation, May 10, 2007
On Thursday, May 10, Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) held graduation ceremonies at Cricket Arena in Charlotte. More than 500 students walked across the stage as part of the commencement celebration, setting a record for the College. In addition, 53 students graduated from the nursing program, the largest in the College’s history.
Sara Martinez Tucker, U.S. Under Secretary of Education, served as the guest speaker at the commencement exercises. As Under Secretary of Education, Ms. Martinez Tucker is responsible for implementing the work of U.S. Secretary Margaret Spellings’ Commission on the Future of Higher Education. She also coordinates policies, programs, and activities related to vocational and adult education, postsecondary education, college aid, and President George Bush's Pell Grant reform initiative
During the commencement exercises, two awards were presented. Christa Overcash received the Distinguished Service Award from the College, and Stanley Law, YCommunity Vice President of the Dowd/Stratford Richardson YMCA’s, received the Richard H. Hagemeyer Educational Advancement Award.
In addition, nearly 250 Adult High School and GED graduates participated in a graduation ceremony at Cricket Arena Thursday afternoon. The Adult High School program at CPCC is affiliated with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, which awards the diplomas. Jennifer Roberts, chairperson of the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners, was the guest speaker. Roberts was elected at-large for her second term on the board. She served as executive director of the Charlotte World Affairs Council from 1997 until 2002 and currently serves as an adjunct professor in the International Studies Department at UNC-Charlotte. She is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, and has a Masters Degree in International Affairs from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, DC and a Masters in European History from the University of Toronto.
