Amazing CPCC Instructor Leaves Gift to CPCC
Renee Prim Gives Back to the College that Offered Her Hope
Renee Prim was only 21 years old when a playground injury left her paralyzed. After rallying through rehabilitation, she took advantage of what CPCC had to offer through education and then employment. After working more than 27 years at the College in the instructional lab as a facilitator and instructor, Prim and her husband David Cole have decided to give back to the College that offered hope to Prim. A generous gift of their nearly 22 acre farm near Shelby to Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) will provide support to students with special needs. On Friday, March 14 at noon, CPCC will dedicate the fourth floor of the Instructional Technology (IT) building on Central Campus as the Prim-Cole Center (Central Campus – corner of Elizabeth Avenue and Charlottetowne Avenue). After her accident in 1973, Prim decided to obtain more education at CPCC. Her mother wheeled her to class. Prim taped lectures, borrowed notes from classmates, and took oral exams. Prim had previously earned an executive secretarial degree from CPCC. She then went on to obtain an associate in arts and programming degrees from CPCC, a bachelors degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in business administration, as well as an online masters in business administration from the University of Phoenix. Prim retired from CPCC in 2002 after serving 27 years in the instructional lab as a facilitator and instructor. Her husband also worked in the same lab as a part-time instructor for 19 years.
“Renee Prim is truly an amazing individual,” states Dr. Tony Zeiss, President of CPCC. “She has served as an inspiration to many at the College. We’re excited to be able to dedicate the Prim-Cole Technology Center in honor of their generous gift and the tremendous example she and her husband shared with this College. Her gift will continue to help students with special needs at CPCC.”

Gov. Mike Easley and Hendrick Automotive Group Chairman Rick Hendrick will help dedicate Central Piedmont Community College's new Joe Hendrick Center for Automotive Technology at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
Matthews Mayor Lee Myers and CPCC President Tony Zeiss will also speak at the dedication, which will be held at the college's Levine Campus, 2800 Campus Ridge Road in Matthews. Guests will be able to tour the new center after the ceremony.
The 35,000-square-foot building, with six classrooms and six labs, will serve as headquarters to many of CPCC's training programs in automotive technology. It's named after Rick Hendrick's father, Joe, a pioneer in the state's automotive and racing industries.
"It was obvious to everyone who knew my father that he had a love of cars and a great desire to help others, especially young folks, reach their true potential," Rick Hendrick said in a college news release. "He would be so humbled to know that his name will be associated with an institution that honors both of those passions."
Performance Hall on Central Campus to Honor Contributions of the Tate Family
Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) will dedicate the Allen and Barbara Tate Hall on Thursday, March 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the Overcash Academic and Performing Arts Center (Central Campus – 1201 Elizabeth Avenue). The dedication comes as a result of a generous gift made by Allen Tate Foundation to CPCC. During the celebration, remarks will be made by CPCC President Dr. Tony Zeiss, Central Campus Dean Cindy Johnston, and CPCC Foundation Board President Tommy Norman. In addition, Allen Tate and members of his family will participate in a ribbon-cutting celebration.
The Allen and Barbara Tate Hall, which seats 170 people, incorporates outstanding acoustics and functional design to serve the cultural and academic needs of the College and community. Tate Hall will serve as a venue for musical recitals, lectures, and literary and poetry readings. The hall is an integral part of the Overcash Academic and Performing Arts Center, which opened in the fall of 2005.
“We are extremely appreciative of the generous gift and the strong support the Allen Tate Company has provided to CPCC over the years,” states Dr. Tony Zeiss, President of CPCC. “The Tate Hall will provide a first class venue for our arts students and the community at large. CPCC is honored to associate the Tate name with this performance venue.”
The dedication will be part of the Allen Tate Company’s 50th Anniversary Celebration scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in the Dale F. Halton Theater. More than 600 invited guests are expected to attend the celebration.
