Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship Program

International experience is critically important in the educational and career development of American students, but it can also require a substantial financial investment. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program brings the experience of studying abroad within reach of those students traditionally underrepresented in international exchange programs.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is a congressionally funded program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education through its Southern Regional Center in Houston, Texas. The goal of the Gilman International Scholarship Program is to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go.

The Gilman Program supports undergraduates who are recipients of the Federal Pell Grant and awards scholarships of up to $5,000 for study abroad for up to one academic year. In addition students who study a “critical-need” language are eligible for one of the 25 Critical Need Language Supplements of $3,000, for a possible total award of $8,000.

Our website, www.iie.org/gilman, also contains valuable resources, including the online application, guidance for frequently asked questions.

Veterans' Education Fund

If you are a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) or Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and finding that the cost of higher education is keeping you from getting a degree, you are not alone. Ninety percent of enlisted personnel do not have a college degree, and with 375,000 troops separating from the service every year, many are finding that current education benefits are just not enough.

The Fund for Veterans' Education will provide scholarships to help meet the cost associated with higher education for veterans from all branches of the United States armed forces who served in Afghanistan or Iraq since September 11, 2001, and who are now enrolled in college or vocational-technical school.

Scholarship recipients are selected primarily on the basis of financial need. In addition, length of military service (number of months and number of tours served) will be considered.

The fund's revenue is derived entirely from grants and gifts from foundations, corporations, and individuals. The Fund for Veterans’ Education is an independent, 501(c)3, not-for-profit organization.

More information including application process is available at www.veteransfund.org.
