EARN Scholarship
Facts:Requirements:
  • Gift Aid (does not have to be repaid)
  • Funded by the State of North Carolina
  • Awards determined by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority, through College Foundation, Inc.
  • Full-time students determined eligible may receive awards of $4,000 per academic year (divided by semester).
  • Awards are not available for summer terms.
  • The total parent income of Dependent students must be at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines for their reported family size (for a family of four, this is $41,300 per the 2007 federal poverty guidelines)
  • Beginning with the 2009-2010 academic year, students may receive EARN Scholarships after their first year in college only as renewal of an EARN Scholarship received during their first academic year. Students must continue to meet all other eligibility requirements of the EARN Scholarship program along with the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements of the institution that they attend. Students may receive the Scholarship for a maximum of four semesters.
  • Complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Be a North Carolina resident for tuition purposes
  • Meet all eligibility requirements for the Federal Pell Grant (including citizenship or eligible non-citizenship status ) except for the Expected Contribution (EFC) requirement
  • Be a dependent student for financial aid purposes or a foster child (independent) with appropriate documentation
  • Have income that is at or below 200% of the federal poverty level
  • Enroll as a full-time undergraduate student in a degree, certificate or diploma program for the academic year immediately following graduation from a North Carolina high school or home school or receipt of a GED.
  • Make Satisfactory Academic Progress
How to Apply:
  • Apply to the college, request an official high school/GED transcript, and be admitted to an eligible program of study.
  • Complete the FAFSA form.
  • If you are applying for the Fall 2008, Spring 2009 or Summer 2009, complete the 2008/09 FAFSA form.
  • Submit completed FAFSA application to the U. S. Department of Education.
  • You have three options for signing your online FAFSA.
    1. If you have a PIN, you can sign your FAFSA electronically. Parents with PINS can also sign electronically.
    2. If you do not have a PIN, you can apply for one by going to www.pin.ed.gov. You can print a paper signature page from FAFSA on the Web, sign it, and mail it to the address provided.
    3. You can transmit your online FAFSA without signing. If you choose this option, your Student Aid Report (SAR) will be sent in the mail requesting signatures. Sign and return your SAR right away so that your FAFSA can be completed.
  • Once you have decided how to sign your application, you need to transmit it by clicking the "Submit My FAFSA Now" button at the bottom of the screen. You will then be taken to a Web page that confirms you have successfully transmitted your FAFSA. Record or print your confirmation number and your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Your EFC will be used to determine the types and amounts of aid you will receive.
  • Complete your Financial Aid file. (Check priority dates.)
