NASA Glenn Faculty Fellowship Program (NGFFP)

The 2012 NGFFP application process will begin on November 14, 2011 and end on February 6, 2012.

Program Description

Ten-week fellowships for full-time science and engineering faculty members who are at accredited US universities and colleges are available at NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC), Cleveland, Ohio, during the summer months.  The official tenure period for 2012 Fellowship is Monday, June 4 through Friday, August 10. The proposed research project must be aligned with the research and technology needs of GRC, and have the potential to advance NASA mission.

 The Aeronautics and Space Research and Technology Fellowship is intended to provide university and college faculty opportunities to:
(1) Enhance their professional knowledge by performing relevant and high cutting-edge research at GRC;
(2) Stimulate exchange of ideas between faculty and employees of NASA GRC;
(3) Enrich and refresh the research and teaching at US academic institutions through infusion of NASA mission-related research and technology content into classroom teaching; and
(4) Contribute to the research, technology and engineering work packages and objectives of GRC.  Fellows work on projects to complement in-house efforts by their GRC professional colleagues.

Glenn Research Center

A distinguishing feature of GRC is its unique blend of aeronautics and space flight experience. The Center's world-class research efforts and technological advancements encompass space flight systems development; In-Space Propulsion Systems and Cryogenic Fluids Management; Power, Energy Storage and Conversion; Air-Breathing Propulsion; Physical Science and Biomedical Technologies in Space; Materials & Structures for Extreme Environments; and Communication Technology and Development. The main campus of GRC is adjacent to the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Its 140 buildings have 24 major facilities and more than 500 specialized research and test facilities. The other campus, Plum Brook Station, is located 50 miles west of Cleveland. The 6,400 acre Station offers four large world-class facilities for space technology and capability developed testing for NASA's mission and major programs.

Glenn Research Center (Cleveland, Ohio) is designated as NASA lead Center for Air-Breathing Propulsion from subsonic to hypersonic speed. In this capacity it is Glenn's role to develop, verify, and transfer Air-Breathing Propulsion technologies to U.S. industry. Glenn is, also, a designated Center of Excellence in Turbomachinery. The role here is to develop new and innovative turbomachinery technology to improve the reliability and performance, efficiency and affordability, capacity and environmental compatibility of future aeronautical and space propulsion systems. Other Glenn primary areas of expertise include a broad array of research, technology and engineering development efforts in aerospace power, space electronics, launch and exploration vehicles, and  space processes and experiments which include combustion and reacting systems, and fluid physics and transport.

Additionally, Glenn is engaged in technology development in advanced energy, including renewable wind, solar and coal energy. Some of several energy-related demonstration projects focus on testing, evaluation and advancement of wind turbines, fuel cells and photovoltaics.

 Research and technology, and engineering engagements comprise NASA mission-related areas of interest, including:

  1. Acoustics
  2. Advanced Energy (Renewable Wind and Solar, Coal Energy and Alternative Energy)
  3. Advanced Microwave Communications
  4. Aeronautical and Space Systems Analysis
  5. Computer Systems and Networks
  6. Electric (Ion) Propulsion
  7. Icing and Cryogenic Systems
  8. Instrumentation, Controls and Electronics
  9. Fluids, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Turbomachinery
